WASHINGTON — The redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester crossover earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2014 Forester received four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The Forester also earned a "good" rating on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's new "small overlap" crash test, the only one of 13 small crossovers and SUVs to get the distinction. The new test replicates a crash in which the corner of a car hits an object such as a tree or pole. The test is noteworthy because it is not yet included in the federal government's five-star ratings.

New Forester safety features for 2014 include anti-whiplash front seats, a driver's knee airbag, an impact-sensing fuel-system cutoff and a brake override system. That system cuts engine power if the driver applies both the brake and the accelerator beyond a certain threshold. The crossover also includes six airbags and an optional EyeSight driver assist system that bundles such items as pre-collision braking and a lane-departure warning system.

The Forester competes with the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4, among others.

Edmunds says: The 2014 Subaru Forester is a standout in this segment when it comes to safety.
