2014 Mitsubishi Mirage, 2012 i-MiEV Recalled for Airbag Problem

WASHINGTON Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 13,558 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage hatchbacks and 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric cars because the frontal airbag may have a delayed deployment and/or the side and curtain airbag may not deploy at all, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The problem has been traced to increased resistance in the impact sensor for the airbag system.

"In the event of a crash, an airbag that does not deploy or deploys late, increases the risk of occupant injury," said NHTSA in its recall summary.

Mitsubishi told federal safety regulators as of September 2015, there are no field reports involving accidents or injuries linked to the recall.

The affected Mirage cars were built from July 27, 2013 to November 20, 2013. The affected i-MiEVs were built from October 28, 2011 to September 7, 2012.

Mitsubishi dealers will replace the affected impact sensors. A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.

Edmunds says: Owners of these cars should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment with their dealer. If you have an immediate concern, it's best to contact your dealer now.
