WASHINGTON The 2014 Mazda 3 earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The rating applies to sedan and five-door hatchback versions of the 2014 Mazda 3.

The Mazda 3 received five stars in front and side impact tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The 2014 Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback are 2014 Top Safety Pick+ winners, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The cars earned "good" ratings in all IIHS crash tests, including the small overlap front crash test and the moderate overlap front crash test.

The small overlap front crash test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole. In the moderate overlap front crash test, the forces in the test are similar to those that would result from a frontal offset crash between two vehicles of the same weight, each going just under 40 mph.

Standard safety features on the 2014 Mazda 3 include six airbags, antilock brakes, dynamic stability control, traction control and hill launch assist.

Competitors to the Mazda 3 include the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Versa and Toyota Corolla.
