WASHINGTON — The 2014 Lexus ES 350 luxury sedan earned the top five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The ES 350 received five stars in front and side impact tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The ES 350 received "good" ratings in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, including the moderate overlap front test. The forces in this test are similar to those that would result from a frontal offset crash between two vehicles of the same weight, each going just under 40 mph.

All ratings apply to the 2014 Lexus ES 350 and ES 300h.

The ES 350 is equipped with 10 standard airbags, including knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, along with electronic stability control and antilock brakes. Optional safety equipment includes a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a pre-collision system and a lane-departure alert system.

Competitors to the ES 350 include the 2014 Acura RLX, Cadillac XTS and Kia Cadenza.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers should note that the Acura RLX and Kia Cadenza have not been rated yet by NHTSA. But the 2014 Cadillac XTS also earned the top five-star overall safety rating in federal crash tests.
