AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Chrysler on Friday teased the 2014 Dodge Durango ahead of its debut at the 2013 New York Auto Show.

Chrysler promised that the 2014 Durango will get "several new class-exclusive features for 2014, making it the Dodge brand's most technologically advanced, fuel-efficient and stylish Durango ever."

A single teaser image showing a headlight was released.

The Dodge Durango has some tough competition, including the 2013 Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse and Honda Pilot.

Chrysler did not reveal if the Durango would get a downsized engine or a new eight- or nine-speed automatic transmission, something that would help to boost its fuel economy.

The 2013 Dodge Durango 2WD with a 3.6-liter V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission returns 16 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 2013 Durango 2WD with a 5.7-liter V8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission returns 14 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

In comparison, a 2013 Ford Explorer FWD with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission returns 20 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway.

Gas prices remain a concern for consumers shopping in this segment. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Friday pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline at $3.68 versus $3.76 a month ago.

It is unclear whether Chrysler will offer a Durango SRT8 model.

The 2013 Dodge Durango starts at $30,490, including a $995 destination charge. The 2013 Ford Explorer starts at $29,995, including an $895 destination charge.

Edmunds says: This will be one of the more important domestic reveals at the 2013 New York Auto Show, as the Durango continues to duke it out with some mighty competitors.
