WASHINGTON — The 2014 Chevrolet Traverse crossover earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Traverse received five stars in front and side impact tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The Traverse received "good" ratings in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, including the moderate overlap front crash test. The forces in the test are similar to those that would result from a frontal offset crash between two vehicles of the same weight, each going just under 40 mph.

New safety features for the 2014 model year include forward collision alert and lane-departure warning systems. They are standard on LTZ models and available on LT models. The crash-avoidance technologies use a camera and sensors to help determine when the driver is getting too close to a vehicle up ahead or when the vehicle enters another lane without the use of a turn signal. The driver is alerted with visual cues on the dashboard, as well as audible signals.

Traverse also features the industry's first front center side airbag. It is designed to provide additional restraint to drivers and front passengers in far-side impact crashes, where the affected occupant is on the opposite, non-struck side of the vehicle. In a crash, the airbag deploys from the inboard side of the driver's seat and inflates between the driver and front passenger.

Electronic stability control and antilock brakes are standard on the Traverse.

Traverse competitors include the 2014 Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot and Mazda CX-9.
