WASHINGTON The 2014 Buick LaCrosse sedan earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The LaCrosse received five stars in front and side impact crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test. The ratings apply to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the 2014 LaCrosse, along with the LaCrosse eAssist model.

Standard equipment includes eight airbags, including rear-seat thorax airbags, electronic stability control, traction control and antilock brakes. New optional standard equipment includes lane departure warning, lane change alert and side blind zone alert. Buyers can also add the safety alert seat that provides seat vibrations in the direction of a crash threat.

The mildly refreshed 2014 LaCrosse has not been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2013 LaCrosse is an IIHS Top Safety Pick, receiving "good" scores in all crash tests.

The LaCrosse competes with the Lexus ES 350, Lincoln MKS and Volvo S60, among others.

Edmunds says: Buick's popular sedan is a safety standout, something that car shoppers may want to note.
