WASHINGTON The 2014 BMW 3 Series earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 3 Series received four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and five stars in the rollover crash test.

The rating applies to all versions of the 3 Series, including the 2014 BMW 320i, 328d, 328i and 335i Xdrive GT.

The 2014 3 Series received "good" ratings in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, but earned a "marginal" rating in the small overlap front crash test. That test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

Standard safety features across the 3 Series lineup include dynamic stability control, traction control and knee airbags for the driver and front-seat passenger. Optional safety equipment includes an active blind-spot detection system, lane-departure warning system and forward collision warning system.

Competitors to the BMW 3 Series include the Audi A4, Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Edmunds says: Stellar marks for the 2014 BMW 3 Series from federal safety regulators. But car shoppers should note that all of the aforementioned rivals also received five-star overall safety ratings from NHTSA as well.
