The Audi A6 and S6 earned the perfect score, with five stars in frontal, side and rollover crash tests.
The Audi A6 received "good" ratings in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, including the moderate overlap front crash test. The forces in the test are similar to those that would result from a frontal offset crash between two vehicles of the same weight, each going just under 40 mph.
"When Audi engineers set out to make the A6 and S6 models unsurpassed in their class they made safety one of their first priorities," said Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, in a statement. "The five-star rating affirms that commitment to our customers and vehicle safety."
Standard safety equipment on the cars includes eight airbags, including knee airbags and hydraulic brake assist that automatically senses emergency braking and applies maximum available power boost to reduce overall stopping distance.
The cars also feature crash sensors that automatically unlock doors, activate interior lighting and hazard warning lights, along with switching off the fuel pump and engine.
Edmunds says: Car shoppers should note that the 2014 BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class fell slightly short of the 2014 Audi A6 and S6 in the federal crash tests. In other words, Audi was the only automaker to get a perfect score among these competitors. The 2014 Lexus GS has not been rated.
