WASHINGTON — BMW of North America is recalling 30,456 2014-'15 Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S Hardtop 2 Door cars and the 2015 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop to boost side-impact protection, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The affected vehicles do not meet the side-impact performance requirements for the rear-seat passengers," NHTSA said in its recall summary. "If the side-impact performance requirements are not met, rear-seat passengers may be at a higher risk of injury during a crash."
BMW told federal safety regulators it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to the recall.
This is an expansion of a December 23, 2014, Mini recall involving 3,085 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop 2 Door cars for the same problem.
Mini dealers will install additional energy absorption material between the rear interior side panels and exterior vehicle body. The recall is expected to begin September 12. Owners can contact Mini customer service at 1-866-825-1525.
Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment at their Mini dealership.
