WASHINGTON — Kia Motors America is recalling 208,858 2014-'15 Kia Soul and Kia Soul EV wagons because a section of the accelerator pedal may bend and fracture, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"If the vehicle has a bent or broken accelerator pedal, the driver may have difficulty accelerating the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash," said NHTSA in its recall summary.
As of February 24, Kia told federal safety regulators that there have been no accidents or injuries linked to the recall. There are 12 warranty claims associated with the problem.
Kia also said that field experience and testing indicates that the problem "has only occurred when the vehicle is stationary. If the driver continues to operate the vehicle, acceleration input could be impaired while driving."
Improved accelerator pedal assemblies have been installed in the Soul and Soul EV starting on January 9, 2015.
Edmunds says: This recall begins shortly, so make a service appointment with your dealer to schedule the repair as soon as you receive your official recall notice.
