The recalled vehicles include the 2015 BMW X5 xDrive 35d built from August 19, 2014 to February 16, 2015 and the 2014-'15 BMW X5 xDrive 35i, X5 sDrive 35i and X5 xDrive 50i built from August 28, 2013 to February 16, 2015.
"In the affected vehicles, the Head Protection System airbag may not be securely connected to the airbag inflator gas generator," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "Without a secure connection to the inflator, the HPS airbags may have insufficient inflation during a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury."
BMW told federal safety regulators it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to the recall.
