HERNDON, Virginia — The new 2013 Volkswagen Passat Wolfsburg Edition starts at $24,290, including a $795 destination charge.

The Passat Wolfsburg Edition adds more high-end equipment, including 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats and a media interface with an iPod cable. Other features include perforated V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces, a power driver seat and satellite radio.

The new model offers buyers a chance to step up from the base Passat S with a six-speed automatic transmission for $550. The base 2013 Volkswagen Passat 2.5L S with the six-speed automatic transmission starts at $23,740, including shipping.

The Wolfsburg Edition slots in between the base S model and the midlevel SE trims. The Passat pricing strategy appears to be somewhat similar to that of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata, a Passat competitor. Sonata buyers have several models to choose from priced in the low- to mid-$20,000 range. They include a 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS that starts at $21,990, including a $795 destination charge and a 2013 Hyundai Sonata SE that starts at $24,340, including shipping.

The Passat Wolfsburg Edition, which is named for the automaker's headquarters in Germany, will go on sale in late spring.

Edmunds says: Volkswagen offers 2013 Passat buyers a bit more choice at the low end of the pricing scale with the new Wolfsburg Edition model.
