2013-'16 Chevrolet Sonic and Trax Recalled for Theft-Protection Problem

WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 317,572 2013-'16 Chevrolet Sonic and Trax vehicles, along with the 2013-'15 Chevrolet Spark, to fix a theft-protection problem, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The vehicles are equipped with a Bring Your Own Media radio.

"The affected radios may fail to provide an audible warning chime when the driver, after turning off the ignition and leaving the key in the cylinder, waits 10 minutes or longer to open the door," NHTSA said in its recall summary. "Without audible indicators, the driver may leave the key in the ignition, increasing the risk of theft."

Chevrolet dealers will update the radio software. A date has not been provided for the recall. Owners can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should be aware of this concern and be ready to make a service appointment with their dealer once they receive an official recall notice.
