"(The sunroofs) may break when the vehicles are operated over a hard road surface or strike a pothole," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Vehicles occupants could be injured by falling glass. A sunroof break during vehicle operation also increases the risk of driver distraction and a resulting vehicle crash."
Volkswagen spokesman Mark Gillies told Edmunds on Sunday that there are no injuries, crashes or fatalities linked to the recall.
The affected Beetles were built from June 13, 2013 to July 3, 2014.
Volkswagen dealers will replace the sunroof. The recall will begin on December 19. Owners can contact Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.
Edmunds says: This recall begins shortly, but if you have any immediate concerns it's best to contact your dealer.
