WASHINGTON Chrysler is recalling 18,245 2013-'15 Ram Cargo Van Tradesman vehicles in the U.S. because of inadvertent airbag deployment, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The affected Ram C/V Tradesman vans are equipped with two front bucket seats and no rear seating.

"Road hazards such as potholes may cause the front passenger side curtain and/or seat airbags to deploy unexpectedly," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of crash or injury to the seat occupant."

The affected vehicles were built from July 25, 2012 to August 20, 2014.

Another 3,870 vans are being recalled in Canada. Chrysler told Edmunds that most owners are fleet customers.

Chrysler is not aware of any related injuries or accidents.

The vehicle configurations, which exclude rear-audio and climate-control components adjacent to sensors, result in gaps that can generate a "resonance." This characteristic is exaggerated by loaded roof racks and rough roads, "which may disrupt normal sensor operation," the automaker said.

Chrysler dealers will update the software in the Occupant Restraint Control module. Owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Edmunds says: Chrysler is advising owners of these vans that the software fix will be available when they receive their formal recall letters or when they are contacted by Chrysler to schedule service.
