WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 76,958 cars and SUVs, including the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, for a possible problem with the windshield defroster, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"In the affected vehicles, the blower motor may fail," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "Failure of the blower motor may reduce the performance of the windshield defroster, diminishing the driver's visibility and increasing the risk of a crash."
Mitsubishi told federal safety regulators there are no reports of accidents or injuries linked to the recall.
The problem has been traced to "an inappropriate manufacturing process involving the blower motor," said Mitsubishi in a document.
"Initially, if this condition occurs, the blower motor may make an unusual noise," it said. "Continued use of the blower motor over time will result in increased noise and/or reduced blower performance.
Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment. But if you have an immediate concern, it's best to contact your dealer now.
