2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Among Vehicles Included in Expanded Takata Recall

WASHINGTON — Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 199,705 vehicles, including the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, for defective Takata front-passenger airbag inflators, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The vehicles include:

  • 2008-'11 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic sedan
  • 2008-'11 Mercedes-Benz C350 sedan
  • 2008-'11 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sedan
  • 2010-'11 Mercedes-Benz GLK350
  • 2010-'11 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic
  • 2010-'11 Mercedes-Benz E350 coupe
  • 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 convertible
  • 2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 coupe
  • 2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 convertible

"In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front airbags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling," NHTSA said in its recall summary. "An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death."

Daimler AG, the parent company, told federal safety regulators it is not aware of "any field incidents with the subject Takata inflators."

Mercedes-Benz dealers will replace the front-passenger airbag modules. Parts are not available at this time.

Owners will be sent an interim notification in July. A second notice will be sent when parts are available. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-877-496-3691.

Edmunds says: Owners should stay in touch with their Mercedes-Benz dealer for the latest information on parts availability.
