2011 Kia Sportage Recalled for Brake Light Problem

WASHINGTON Kia Motors America is recalling 7,722 2011 Kia Sportage SUVs because the brake-light switch may intermittently fail, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Whenever the brake switch is not working, the brake lights will not illuminate, reducing the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions of stopping, increasing the risk of a crash," said NHTSA in its recall summary.

Kia told federal safety regulators there are no accidents or injuries linked to the recall as of June 2.

The affected Sportages were built from March 7, 2011 to June 8, 2011.

Kia dealers will replace the brake-light switch. The recall is expected to begin sometime in July. Owners can contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542.

Edmunds says: This recall is expected to begin soon, so it's a good idea to make a service appointment with your dealer if you own one of these Sportages.
