DES PLAINES, Illinois The 2011-'13 Ford Escape topped the list of the most stolen SUVs and crossover vehicles released on Monday by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

The 2011-'13 Ford Edge came in behind the Escape, followed by the Ford Explorer.

The 2011-'13 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Kia Sorento were popular with car thieves, too.

Sport-utility vehicles and crossover-utility vehicles, stolen between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2013, were included in the report.

"In terms of class, compact CUVs experienced the most thefts with 6,981," the report said. "Large SUVs were next with 3,206, followed by midsized CUVs (3,204), large SUVs (2,902) and premium CUVs (2,394)."

The top five states for thefts of crossovers and SUVs were California, Florida, Michigan, Texas and New York.

Edmunds says: The Ford Escape is not only popular with car shoppers, but it has a bull's eye on its tailgate when it comes to car thieves.
