WASHINGTON — Jaguar Land Rover North America is recalling 40,551 2010-'15 Land Rover LR2 and 2012-'13 Range Rover Evoque SUVs because the passenger airbag may be disabled, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"A component within the Occupant Classification System Electronic Control Unit may fail, resulting in the front seat passenger airbag being totally or partially disabled," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, the airbag may not deploy or may not deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury to the front seat passenger."

The automaker told federal safety regulators that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

Land Rover dealers will update the Restraint Control Module software.

The recall is expected to begin on August 30. Owners can contact Land Rover at 1-800-637-6837.

Edmunds says: This recall will begin soon, but if you have an immediate concern, it's best to contact your dealer.
