WASHINGTON — Daimler Vans USA is recalling 136,361 commercial vans, including the 2010-'14 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500, for potentially defective Takata airbags, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Also included in the recall are the 2007-?08 Dodge Sprinter and 2007-'14 Freightliner Sprinter.
"Upon deployment of the driver's frontal airbag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "The inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
The affected vans were built from July 1, 2006 to July 31, 2014.
This is part of a larger expanded recall of vehicles with Takata airbags. Takata said in January that inflators in more than 5 million vehicles were defective.
Daimler AG said it is not aware of any "field incidents," in a report filed with NHTSA.
Daimler Vans will notify the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner owners and Fiat-Chrysler will notify the Dodge owners.
Edmunds says: Dealers are waiting for parts in this ongoing recall. Owners should wait for their official recall notice or keep in close contact with their dealer for the latest information.
