WASHINGTON — Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 126,260 2008-'09 Mercedes-Benz C300, C300 4Matic, C63 AMG and C350 sedans and the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 SUV for unexpected airbag deployment, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"Due to a manufacturing error, the airbag control unit may corrode and cause the control unit to malfunction," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "(This) may cause the airbags to unexpectedly deploy, increasing the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
"Alternatively, the airbag control unit malfunction may cause the airbags to not deploy in the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, increasing the risk of occupant injury."
A Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking if there are any accidents, injuries or fatalities linked to the recall.
Edmunds says: Owners of these cars should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment with their dealer.
