2005-'06 Ford GT Added to Takata Recall for Defective Airbags

DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2005-'06 Ford GT coupe has been added to Ford's recall of 1.9 million vehicles for defective Takata front-passenger airbag inflators, Ford said on Thursday.

Ford spokeswoman Elizabeth Weigandt told Edmunds the Ford GT was omitted inadvertently in the original announcement about the expanded recall.

The recall affects about 3,500 older-model GTs.

"In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front airbags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling," said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in its recall summary. "An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death."

Ford said it is not aware of any injuries associated with these inflators in any Ford vehicles. Driver-side airbag inflators are not included in this recall.

Ford dealers will replace the front-passenger airbag inflator. The recall is expected to begin the week of July 11.

"We are working with our suppliers to develop replacement service inflators as quickly as possible," Weigandt said.

She added that Ford dealers "may be able to provide service loaner vehicles on an as-needed basis depending on vehicle availability and customer needs."

Ford GT owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673.

Edmunds says: Owners of the 2005-'06 Ford GT should be aware that they are also included in this latest recall and be ready to make a dealership service appointment once they receive their official recall notice.
