WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling an unspecified number of 2004-'05 Mitsubishi Lancer cars in a limited regional recall because they have passenger-side airbag inflators that may rupture, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The affected Lancers are currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Mitsubishi is one of several automakers to conduct limited regional recalls for vehicles equipped with Takata-brand passenger side airbag inflators.

"Upon deployment of the passenger-side frontal airbag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger-side frontal airbag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants."

NHTSA said it is concerned that humidity is a contributing factor to the inflator problem.

"Be advised that (Mitsubishi) has not made an independent safety defect determination, has not approved a safety recall, and is unaware of any injuries and/or accidents related to this alleged issue," said Mitsubishi in a letter to federal safety regulators dated July 10.

"Nevertheless, (Mitsubishi) will cooperate in good faith with NHTSA by sending our customers a letter encouraging them to have the field service action performed."

The automaker is characterizing this as a "field service action," but NHTSA is describing it as a "limited regional recall."

Mitsubishi did not respond immediately to an Edmunds query asking how many Lancers are involved in the recall.

Mitsubishi dealers will replace the passenger-side airbag inflators. A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Mitsubishi at 1-714-372-8000.

Edmunds says: If you own one of the affected Mitsubishi Lancers, it's best to keep in touch with your dealer for next steps.
