Some brake/throttle overlap off the line improves acceleration performance. Best runs were in Sport mode, which snaps between gears more rapidly than Drive. Such a flexible engine, too. Pulls hard from low rpm but still loves to rev. And it will do so all the way to 7,000 rpm if you keep your foot in it.
The X3's brakes are up to the task of stopping this compact SUV reliably. Though we saw marginal distance increases in our testing, pedal feel remained consistent over four runs. At 129 feet, the best stop isn't extremely short, but it's respectable. Stability is very good during full-ABS stops.
Slalom: Weighty steering in Sport mode offers ample feel to sense limits. This is a genuinely impressive-handling SUV. Confidence in rapid transitions is good, and midcorner bumps seem to matter little. Very difficult to get in over your head here, as ESC keeps things in check without being a burden. Driving can be engaging in the X3 even with the electronics setting the limits. Skid pad: Though there's no adjusting the X3's balance once the front tires' limits are reached, those limits are respectably high. At 0.81g this is one of the more grippy compact SUVs on the market and it shows in daily driving, too. The X3 is enjoyable around entrance ramps. Stability control is competently tuned to accommodate moderately aggressive driving without intervention.
