Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsThe 650i Convertible produces a wide range of acceleration times from different combos of Norm TC on, Sport TC off and Sport + (Dyn TC). Quickest run came in Sport TC off, and manual shift mode (which actually auto-shifts very quickly). Engine feels strong and torque-rich, but not as much as the recent M-B turbo V8s.
Braking commentsMade no difference what mode, every stop was nearly identical: minimal dive, no ABS buzz, straight and largely fade-free. Pedal remained medium firm throughout.
Handling commentsSkid pad: Supremely neutral with just a hint of understeer with ESC off. Could almost nudge the tail out but not quite. Steering weight changes with mode but it remains very precise regardless. With ESC in dynamic mode it breathes off the throttle almost imperceptibly. Slalom: With ESC off this car exhibits classic RWD behavior, but these 20-inch Dunlops step off rather abruptly (especially with drop-throttle) so the trick is to balance between under- and oversteer. Steering isn't all that informative, but is laser-precise. Excellent ESC in dynamic mode (Sport +) and ESC off only available in Sport.
