SUVs have become a required element of nearly every luxury automaker's lineup, and now Bentley has gotten into the game with the 2017 Bentley Bentayga. In addition to the expected ultra-luxurious interior and potent performance, you also get a surprising amount of off-road prowess.
What is not a surprise is that the Bentayga also comes with a hefty price tag.
The 2017 Bentley Bentayga can seat either four or five passengers. It's about the same size as the new Audi Q7, but the similarities end there. The Bentayga comes standard with a 12-cylinder engine and a starting price equal to about four or five Q7s. That's a big step up from even the top trims of the majority of luxury SUVs on the road today.
That money buys a lot of power and a lot of Bentley-style luxury and craftsmanship. Leather, wood and finely worked metal abound in the Bentayga's cabin, and all of it is handled by skilled craftsmen. Under the Bentayga's hood is a 6.0-liter W12 engine that cranks out a whopping 600 horsepower and can shuffle the big Bentley up to 60 mph in just 4 seconds. Air ride suspension and active anti-roll bars help with both on-road handling and comfort and off-road terrain.
Feature highlights include a power liftgate, off-road skid plates, a surround-view camera system, an automated parking system and several advanced safety systems. Other available options include a sporty set of carbon-fiber exterior treatments and retractable side steps. People familiar with Bentley won't be surprised to learn that a removable three-piece picnic hamper set that also doubles as seats (one hamper is refrigerated for your Champagne; another is filled with china, silverware and stemware) is also available.
Bentley will also customize Bentayga in almost any color inside and out at considerable expense. The most talked-about option, however, is the Tourbillon clock crafted by Breitling, which is said to cost around $160,000.
