LAS VEGAS — The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Ultimate Edition is a special model that marks the end of production for the distinctive SUV, Toyota announced at this week's 2013 SEMA Show .

The special-edition version of the standard 2014 FJ Cruiser will have a production run of 2,500 vehicles and will go on sale in February, with pricing announced closer to launch date.

The FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Ultimate Edition "is a commemorative final special edition of the FJ Cruiser," Toyota said in a statement.

"It is the toughest and most capable FJ ever and pays tribute to the iconic vehicle that will end its production run at the conclusion of the 2014 model year," the automaker said.

A race-inspired Toyota Racing Development (TRD) off-road suspension is part of the package. Other details include TRD Bilstein race shocks, a TRD front skid plate, TRD 16-inch beadlock wheels with BFGoodrich A/T KO tires, rock rails and a roof rack. The special model gets a unique white grille and Monotone "Heritage Blue" paint.

Toyota sold just 926 FJ Cruisers in October, according to its monthly sales report. The Japanese automaker has sold 10,676 FJ Cruisers calendar year-to-date, a drop of 3 percent versus a year ago. Sales of the FJ Cruiser were robust in the first years of an eight-year run, when Toyota sold more than 50,000 in each of the first two years. In total, the company's moved 200,000 FJ Cruisers since 2006.

The FJ Cruiser was inspired by the original FJ40 from the 1960s and served as an example of Toyota taking some chances with design. Even the color choices for the FJ Cruiser showed a bit of flair. They included "Voodoo Blue" and "Sun Fusion."

Edmunds says: Toyota pulls the plug on one of its more memorable vehicles.
