LOS ANGELES — The new-generation Shelby GT Ford Mustang was unveiled at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show in one of the more important customization announcements.
"The Shelby GT was one of the most important vehicles in modern day Shelby history," said John Luft, president of Shelby American, in a statement. "Ever since the Shelby GT went out of production, people have clamored for its return."
The company is bringing back the Shelby GT Mustang after a five-year hiatus.
The base price of the Shelby GT package, not including the car, is $14,995, according to Shelby American.
The Shelby GT/SC package starts at $27,995.
The base 2014 Ford Mustang GT coupe starts at $31,695, including a $795 destination charge. So buyers can get into the Shelby GT for as little as $46,690.
Shelby and Ford Racing created the iconic Shelby GT in 2007 based on a 4.6-liter Mustang GT.
The new Shelby GT is a "post-title program," which means that Ford dealers send a customer's stock Mustang GT coupe or convertible to Shelby for an upfit.
Entry-level package upgrades include a Ford Racing suspension, Shelby-branded exhaust, intake and engine tune for 430 horsepower, specially designed wheels and tires, short shifter, hood and Le Mans stripes.
The 624-hp Shelby GT/SC version is expected to blast from zero-60 mph in about 3.7 seconds, according to the company. The GT/SC version also comes in 525-hp form.
The car bears the name of legendary racer Carroll Shelby, who died in May 2012.
Edmunds says: You can get into a base 2014 Shelby GT Ford Mustang for under $50K, which has to be one of the best automotive values out there.
