What Is It?

What's Special About It?
Although nominally a concept, the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG is in fact the logical high-performance companion to the 2015 GLA250 4Matic crossover. The production 2015 GLA45 AMG will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January and go on sale in September 2014.

Not coincidentally, the GLA45 has an AMG-developed 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 355 horsepower and 332 pound-feet. These numbers are identical to the 2014 CLA45 AMG sedan we drove earlier this year. Likewise, this performance-themed grocery getter features a seven-speed, dual-clutch automated manual transmission that drives all four wheels through a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

This AMG-tuned crossover will be as quick as the CLA45 (which hits 60 mph in a claimed 4.5 seconds), but Mercedes officials say it's still capable of scalding sub-5-second 0-60-mph runs. That would make it quicker than the BMW X1, which has a turbo six-cylinder.

The Concept GLA45 AMG's simulated racecar livery looks a bit silly here on the 2013 L.A. Auto Show floor, but we're expecting Mercedes to offer versions of its roof-mounted spoiler, black-painted 21-inch wheels (though 20s would certainly be large enough), front splitter and rear diffuser flourish on the production crossover. Another key element is the exhaust system, which features electronically controlled baffles: As on the CLA45, this will ensure the GLA45 makes loud, authoritative noises as it goes down the road rather than sounding like every other buzzy four-cylinder crossover.

What Edmunds Says: Here's your early preview of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG. By small crossover standards, it's going to be fast.
