FRANKFURT, Germany — The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-in Hybrid will return 78 mpg, said Daimler as it disclosed details about the car ahead of its debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.
The super-low-emissions S 500 Plug-in Hybrid can travel about 19 miles on electric power alone, said the automaker.
The S 500 Plug-in Hybrid will arrive in the U.S. in fall 2014, said Christian Bokich, a Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman. He said U.S. pricing is not available at this point.
The new green Benz targets the 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid, which has a price tag of $99,975.
The EPA has not released official fuel economy numbers on either the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid or the Panamera S E-Hybrid.
The S 500 Plug-in Hybrid is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, electric motor and a new high-voltage lithium-ion battery. The V6 engine delivers 329 horsepower, while the electric motor has an output of 107 hp.
The S 500 Plug-in Hybrid sprints from zero to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph, according to Daimler.
One unusual feature is a haptic accelerator pedal.
"A point of resistance on the accelerator pedal provides feedback about the activation of the combustion engine and helps in metering the power output," the automaker said.
The S 500 Plug-in Hybrid can be recharged from an external source with a charging socket located on the right side of the rear bumper.
The car offers four push-button hybrid-operating modes. They are Hybrid, E-mode, E-save and Charge.
In E-mode, the car drives on electric power only. In E-save mode, a fully charged battery is reserved to be able to drive on electric power alone later. In Charge mode, the battery is charged while driving.
The S 500 Plug-in Hybrid is the third hybrid offering in a lineup that includes the S 400 Hybrid and the S 300 Bluetec Hybrid.
Edmunds says: Consumers are seeing the number of plug-in hybrid cars increase, but the new Mercedes-Benz model is likely to be priced out of the reach of many buyers.
