DETROIT — Automakers turned to crayon-like primary colors on cars like the 2014 Porsche 911 Targa, 2014 SRT Viper and Toyota FT-1 Sports Concept in a preview of showroom trends at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

The 2014 Porsche 911 Targa featured a bright, primary blue exterior paint treatment.

The red exterior color on the Toyota FT-1 Sports Concept was a subject of internal debate at the automaker, but won out in the end.

Show observers were struck by the proliferation of brightly colored cars on the show floor, a trend that stands in stark contrast to white and silver being the most popular choices among car shoppers.

Automakers, including Nissan, took pains to highlight vehicle colors in their presentations. The Nissan Sport Sedan Concept, which previews the future Nissan Maxima, stood out with a bold orange paint treatment.

Nissan calls the paint "Strad Amber" and said it was inspired "by the craftsmanship and rich finish of classic violins." The candy-color paint finish gets an orange-amber topcoat over a base of gold paint.

Chrysler showed off a 2014 SRT Viper with a new $5,700 Stryker Green paint job that blends bright green and yellow.

Of course, there were plenty of production cars and trucks with new paint colors for the 2014 model year on display.

The 2014 Ford Taurus on the show floor featured the automaker's new Darkside color, a charcoal shade with teal-green touches. The color is also available on the 2014 Ford Fusion. The 2014 Buick Regal was dressed up in Copper Red Metallic, a new color for 2014.

Edmunds says: The palette at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show was anything but subdued, something that car shoppers can look forward to as they visit showrooms this year.
