3rd update: Not change, but needing breaks at 38,000 seems too soon when virtually all the miles are highway miles. 4th update: 44000 miles. Still love this car. 2nd update: Just turned 36k miles and still love the car. Just replaced tires. I learned that Audi uses a bit of negative camber (helps with cornering) which causes the tires to wear on the inside at a faster rate than normal. Hence, be sure to get the treadwear guarantee and rotate tires to get a healthy credit toward the new tires. Update: After 4+ years of ownership I still love this car. Everything below is still valid. Total mileage after 4.75 years of ownership is about 32,000 I've put 12k miles on the car and have not had any troubles. The dealer support for a condenser that was perforated by a rock was above and beyond. The car is blazing fast. Way better than my G35 or 530 ever were. The S5 is also more refined than those cars too. Since I drive 80 - 85 on the highway, when I need to pass and punch the gas it jumps to 100 almost instantly. Acceleration to 60 is also terrific. Road holding (I have the optional split differential) is incredible. A corner that I could never get past 37 in the G35 I've already done effortlessly at 55 in the S5. I'd try it faster, but there is not enough road to get the speed any higher. I've taken the car on an 850 mile one day drive and found it to be extremely comfortable (I'm 6'0 and 200 pounds). Fuel economy on that road trip was 30 MPG. Around town which is a mix of city/highway mpg is 22. This is based on using mid grade fuel. In regards to the turbo lag, I have found it to be almost imperceptible when the transmission is in sport mode. I basically keep it in sport until I reach a road where I can cruise at a steady speed. Oh, and the car gets plenty of looks. Its a work of art.

This car is absolutely incredible. It drives and handles like a dream. The technology can be a bit overwhelming at first but once you get used to how things work it is great. The controls and ergonomics of the cabin are almost perfect. Great quality materials in the buttons, high-quality diamond stitched Nappa leather and a sound system that is fantastic. Everything is arranged within the cabin with the driver as the focus of all controls and electronics. The virtual cockpit is incredible to use as is everything else. Engine response is superb with just a slight turbo lag in the low rpm range below 1300rpm. Once past that line, the acceleration is incredible. The handling is so balanced with acceleration and cornering that is way out of its class. I could go on and on about what a great car this is but all I can say is this was my first Audi S5 series, it will not be my last.

Fantastic Upgrade from 2015 S5.

The overall feel to me is a higher level of sophistication than previous generation. Audi has made a step up in overall quality of interior design, materials and switch gear. Suspension changes are quite noticeable which provides a more sure footed feel. Gone is the under steer tendency when aggressively taking corners. It feels much quicker with surges of power more instantaneous across the RPM band than the previous generation due to the Turbo providing low end torque where the 2015 Supercharged engine only produced that kind of torque over 3k RPM. Didn't think Audi could improve the interior but they did. Seats are more supportive and yet more comfortable, The changes to the MMI took a little getting use to but now it is second nature accessing information is faster with the new button layout. Input of information is easier too especially with the touch handwriting recognition. MMI\Navi computer is much faster. No lag time between screens and the navigation display is amazingly sharp and directions are accurate. The visual cockpit is a joy to use. Information right in front of you where it should be. Love the multi gauge setups. Even the B&O stereo system is a step up in sound quality. Very glad I upgraded to the 2018.

New technology for crash avoidance in this car is flawed. It was extremely intrusive and on three occasions nearly caused me to have an accident when it suddenly stopped in the middle of an intersection. If a car came opposite in a common left turn lane, for example, the Audi would anticipate having a head on collision and stop my car suddenly when I was trying to cross traffic. I had a 2016 S5 and I thought the technology worked just fine. The 2018 update changed this technology dramatically. I hated it.

This is an outstanding sports car for the driver who doesn't know how to drive a sports car. Incredible road grip and acceleration, but for the driver who wants to power slide and break the rear end loose, I don't know if it's even possible. The car has road grip forever and no matter how hard I push it, it drives like an amusement park ride - like it's on a rail, which is perfect, for me. I am on my 7th lux 4x American pick up and this car is my thrill ride. Any more power and I'd be in trouble, yet MPG is like an economy car. 33-35 MPG on road trips are routine and MPG average with 8000 miles is 27. 60-90 passing in a heartbeat. Seat comfort for 8 hours at a time is fantastic (I am 6'4" tall with a 5 level lumbar fusion and a 2 level cervical fusion and 500 mile trips are painless. One huge gripe - top down 360 degree camera view cannot be kept in program for parking. Software fix is "pending". Don't advertise a feature if software makes it not usable unless it is switched on manually every time it is needed. $68k+ MSRP and 360 view doesn't work. Bad move Audi. Car is flawless otherwise. Amendment 9/6/18: I take care my 84 year old step-mom (lives with me in my home in the Sierras) and she isn't cool with the fact that there isn't anything to hold onto -both getting in and out, or when am pushing it in the twistes. She loves the road hugging when I drive aggressively, but would like a handle on the armrest or inner roofline. Nothing there to hold onto. She loves the car, but my '18 F150 4x is much more old person friendly. Yah, 84 year olds are not the customer demographic, but if you aren't holding onto the steering wheel when driving this car hard, being a passenger needs more grabbability

If Only the Windows Work

It's been about 10 years since I last owned a German car and with great trepidation I bought the S5. I had such a terrible time with my Mercedes (every time I drove past the dealership, I got charged $1,000). It had everything I wanted: horsepower, handling, all wheel drive and it looked awesome! My friends said quality and reliability was unbeatable. Well, let's just say that the windows don't really work when it gets cold. It seems that moisture gets into the window mechanism and freezes during the winter. When that happens, the window does not seal properly (it is a frameless window, so it has to come down a little to release pressure for the doors to open easily). This means that road noise is terrible. Took it to the dealership twice. First time, they said it was a software upgrade issue. The second time, they couldn't replicate the issue. It is frustrating to spend $60K for a car and the windows won't work. Waiting for the lease to complete and I can go back to the reliable Acura.

Had an 06 A5 Premium convertible. Gorgeous and fun to drive but not enough umph! This one on the other hand has the HP my 06 Mustang GT had after some mods to the GT and I doubt the Mustang could outrun it. That sayin something folks! It’s a prestige and I know I know that’s taking it little too far if all your after is horsepower...but I don’t regret it. Took it on a 2000 mile trip and was quite surprised about the mpg even doing 80-90 mph on the interstate. How’s 31 mpg sound? Speaking of sound, WOW! It will take you awhile to learn all the features but you’ll enjoy the process and what Audi has done. Drawbacks? The auto stop engine feature when idling maybe but the feature functions flawlessly. This is a 10 year car for us. Wife drives it more than I do and loves it! It’s white with the red interior so kinda on the feminine side but she looks awesome in it!

I want my old S4 back!

Stay away from this vehicle. It's gorgeous to behold and if you floor the pedal it flies, but in day to day driving it's simply awful. Mine has less than 9K miles on it, and it's been to the shop for no less than six different repairs. Airbag failures, engine thermostat failure, dash electronics failures, and more rattles/squeaks than I can count. It's also been back multiple times for buzzing speaker covers, which appears to be a very difficult problem to fix as the sound system is simply too powerful for the cheap plastic speaker covers which resonate at different bass frequencies. But the absolute worst thing is the laggy throttle response, which is barely even acceptable in the sportiest of modes. Low end throttle response in city navigation is just numb, and you can find countless people on the Audi forums complaining about it. I loved my 2014 S4 and it was superior to this lemming of a vehicle in every way except design/electronics. Oh yeah, and despite the laggy throttle you'll average about 17mpg in 50/50 city/highway driving.

I have owned this car which was a certified pre-owned ( should have been a hint that it was back at the dealership within a year of original sales date ), for about 4 months. When nothing is malfunctioning and it is kept in “s” mode it drive really nice and is much faster than I would have expected. It has been back to the dealership for several problems already and the service department seems willing to resolve most of the issues, but for a car this new (only 12k miles) and as expensive as it was these problems shouldn’t be there. The worst thing that causes me to want to get rid of it is the incessant rattling of things in the dash and the creaking, popping and groaning sounds when I leave my driveway that is somewhat steep or hitting bumps in the road. The roads are pretty good where I live but it sounds like I am in a 20 year old car that has had a rough life. I expect some banging from the firm suspension but this goes far beyond that, especially for this level of a car. update 11/20/2019 Some of the rattling has been resolved in working with the dealership but inevitably some of it doesn't occur when I leave the car with them. Days where the weather has shifted dramatically will be days that the car has lots of unusual sounds inside. However outside of the rattling this car really does perform well. You wont find many other AWD cars that perform they way this car does. It also looks really good inside and out. I still stand by the fact that this car should not have any rattles for the amount of money it cost but it is a decent sports sedan/coupe. Then you add super intrusive safety features that will actually slam on the brakes if you are moving through close traffic and the systems over sensitive sensors (Audi pre-sense) think you are going to have an accident, it’s just too much. I have lost track of how many times accidents were almost caused by this safety feature, it’s too intrusive. I really like the way the car looks both exterior and interior but for the money I expected way more. Audi if you are reading this there are complaints all over the internet about these problems too.

Really nice car with a minor gripe

Scotty Mac, 11/06/2019
2018 Audi S5 Prestige quattro 2dr Convertible AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 8A)
5 of 6 people found this review helpful

First off, let me say that a really like this car. Lots of options, comfortable. and quick. I like the interior and adjustable options (suspension, drivetrain, exhaust, etc.). For a heavy car, it really sticks in the turns. I own a 2002 M roadster and the audi feels like it can stay with it on my favorite cambered on ramp all day long. It probably has more to do with the driver than the car, but I feel like the awd and sport diff really gives you confidence to stick a 4K lb car in the turns. Very quiet for a convertible with the top up. I like the knock down back seats for adding storage to the convertible's reduced trunk space. Now for the gripe: The turbo lag is really unacceptable for a car in this price range - particularly coming out of VW group which has been doing turbos for a while. The previous gen supercharged motor had less output, but no lag. There are ways of getting around it by leaning into the throttle rather than hitting WOT from idle. However, there are times when you are pulling out into traffic when that's exactly what is needed and that hesitation is not a good feeling. Other minor issues: Also, do not like the auto dimming mirrors all around. I wish there was an off option if possible. Night time and early morning driving dims out the rear view to a point where you can only see headlights and not make out what type of vehicle it is. The dimming is not really needed in the side mirrors. A couple of small plastic trim pieces (seat belt hanger rack, rear seat wind block pegs) broke and they all seems to be around $80 for a $2-$10 part. I guess that's what you get expect in this price range. If buying used, I would definitely recommend an extended warranty. I'm not saying things are going to go bad, but this car has a lot of expensive sounding options if repairs are needed. The convertible top actions with the windows lowering and hatch mechanism alone would warrant it, not to mention the seat massagers and LCD dashboard. The stereo sounds awesome, but I'm not even sure where it is located. Its not like you are going to put in an aftermarket unit in this car. I don't want to give the impression that I don't like this car. Its one of the nicest cars I have owned - thus the 4 star rating. I just thought I would point out the shortcomings (all cars have them) that I have noticed during my ownership. I suppose they will come out with an RS cab that I'll start coveting next.....

Pros: Completely reliable so far - just oil changes and regular maintenance. Highly responsive to throttle, although with some turbo lag at low RPMs. Step on the throttle at 70 mph (+) and you feel the front end lift slightly as the car accelerates Amazing mileage for the power of the vehicle. I'll run around 28 mpg on interstates without trying to conserve. Very comfortable for long trips - it even has heated front seat massagers. Full suite of state-of-the-art electronics, including lane departure warning, adaptive cruise, "heads up" display of speed and route info, collision warning, and parking view assist (still have to park yourself manually, though. Spacious trunk for the size vehicle. Cons: Definite 2+2 configuration. Back seat suitable only for cargo (backpack, briefcase, groceries, etc) and small children. Difficult rear seat entry/exit Handling is excellent for normal driving, but not top level for extreme driving You get what you pay for, you get a lot, so the sticker price isn't cheap. At 5 years (2023) still nothing other than normal maintenance, with no noticeable change in mileage or performance

The 2018 S5 Audi Sportback is a slimmer, limber cousin of the S7 with plenty of power for GT driving, ample storage space, excellent tech, and handsome looks. It has also been one the most reliable cars I have ever owned, now reaching 6 years and requiring only routine maintenance. Most folks will be happier with the S5 rather than an RS5 since it has enough power for those not needing track level/competitive performance and is considerably cheaper both to purchase and maintain compared to an RS (I know — I also have an RS5 coupe). The S5 is a very significant upgrade from an A level model, yet remains very dependable.

This my third Audi and each one puts a bigger smile on my face! Why??? Nimble, responsive, sporty, comfortable, great build quality, great acceleration and handling and love the B&O stereo....and electronics are very user friendly. I was driving an A7 and really enjoyed the car...enjoyed but did not love it. After three years it became just a car. I’ve driven my S5 for 4 months now and like it more today than the day I picked it up. Performance is outstanding and it’s the best Drive I’ve had - Lexus, Infiniti, BMW - nothing comes close. Another pleasant surprise - highway mileage pushes 30 mpg. Excellent for the performance. I’d recommend the S5 to anyone who wants great performance that puts a smile on their face.

Ordered it with red leather seats and was worth the wait. Love this car. Must admit getting in and out seems to be a challenge for some (sits low) and the technology pales compared to a Tesla, Appleplay frustrates me, but the ride is great, responsive, quick, handles excellent. No service issues. Had a Q7 before and BMW535 before that. Great purchases on all in my opinion but This is by far the most fun to drive. Fast. Great on turns and windy roads.

Features that are standard on Japanese competitors are extra cost options on the Audi. Although the base price is attractive getting the S5 out the door makes it a very poor value proposition. On top of that the dealers do not want to discount this model therefore they sit on the lot. Looking elsewhere for better values.

The S5 Sportback is a pretty large car. It has loads of power, torque and tech, but it feels kind of unathletic and not much road connectivity. The steering is uncommunicative. It’s hard to feel the perimeter of the car and thus it’s hard to park.i traded this car after a year for a BMW 440xi Gran Coupe which, although not quite as powerful is a lot more fun and engaging to drive.

DRIVING THIS CAR WAS GREAT.The major problem is the trim at the bottom of the door that hits you in the bottom of your calf when entering. This item kept me from buying the Audi S5

Drives nice, lot of technology, plenty of power for highway rampup. Cost is high comparatively but comes with the Audi brand.

2010 --->2019 S5 Cabrio; Best Move Ever

I really enjoyed my 2010 version of this car, despite the repairs costing me more than owning a Camry for 18 years!). So, I decided to get the newer version w/the turbo V6 vs. the older supercharged V6. It makes a dramatic difference in the feel of the car. They've also upgraded the interior significantly in terms of quality of materials and user interface (love the Virtual Cockpit). Just crossing my fingers I don't get a 'mechatronic control module' failure at 40k miles like the last one . . . Not a cheap fix. Still, wouldn't want to drive anything else right now. Best thing for fun in the sun when you live in California.

This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. Fun to drive and practical. So much trunk space and even more with the rear seats down. And the power lift gate makes getting into the boot excitingly easy. Even with your hands full. A whole different car when you go from comfort mode to dynamic. Which makes it a perfect daily driver but also a beast on the weekend back roads. It has all the tech and safety features one could ever want. Seriously, the only thing missing from this vehicle is wireless Apple Car Play. I'm intent to keep it for a long while, or at least until I find the right RS5.
