The 2025 Audi A6 E-tron is the carmaker's latest all-electric vehicle, joining the larger and more expensive S E-tron GT as the only electric cars in Audi's fleet. It's similar in size to the outgoing gas-powered A6 midsize luxury sedan, but it opts for a sporty rear hatch instead of a traditional trunk. The A6 E-tron is offered in either single- or dual-motor configurations, with the former making it Audi's first rear-wheel-drive sedan in nearly a century. In a time when SUVs dominate the EV world, it's refreshing to have a sportier sedan alternative.

We drove the 2025 Audi A6 Sportback e-tron on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.

Driving experience

7.7/10

How does it drive? We tested both the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the car at our test track. The all-wheel-drive car launched from 0 to 60 mph in a rapid 4.2 seconds, and the rear-wheel-drive version wasn't far behind (5.1 seconds). That's comparable to what the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE are capable of.

The steering is light and responsive, making for effortless daily driving, yet the car feels wonderfully balanced and more playful around corners than you'd expect from a sedan this size. Ride quality is a massive highlight. The A6 Sportback E-tron absorbs bumps of all sizes with minimal drama, making it an exceptionally comfortable cruiser. However, the transition from acceleration to regenerative braking when you lift off the accelerator pedal can be somewhat jerky. You'll need a delicate foot to avoid making your passengers queasy.

We had mixed results when testing the A6 Sportback E-tron's driver aids. The adaptive cruise control would sometimes brake later than we would have liked, and the lane centering system would occasionally let the Audi drift too close to other cars for comfort. On the plus side, the augmented reality head-up display is one of the best on the market.

Comfort

How comfortable is it? The A6 Sportback E-tron's front seats are comfortable, with good space and enough adjustability for most drivers. The power-adjusting steering column offers a wide range, and the available head-up display is bright, even when viewed through polarized sunglasses — a convenient feature. Getting in and out is a breeze for both front and rear passengers thanks to generous head clearance and clever door handles that even kids can use easily. The cabin is exceptionally quiet on the highway too.

The second row is adequate but far from spacious. The A6 Sportback E-tron's high floor will push the knees of adults up higher, and the seatback feels too upright for long trips. We also noticed that the pressure-sensitive driver's seat can unintentionally turn the car on or off if you shift your weight while parked. It's a frustrating feature that feels like a design flaw.

The climate controls are mostly touchscreen-based and work well, though we'd want stronger fans for hotter days. While the interior is generally quiet and comfortable, the loud safety alerts can be jarring and more annoying than helpful.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? Audi's new MMI system is a highlight in the A6 Sportback E-tron. We found the large screen responsive, intuitive and thoughtfully laid out. The native navigation, powered by Google Maps, is about as good as it gets, and the Audi voice assistant interfaces with the system smoothly. The optional passenger screen feels a bit like a solution looking for a problem, but it works just fine.

Device integration is excellent. You get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and plenty of USB-C ports for everyone. The only head-scratcher is a minor tech fail: When the car is off but the radio is on, the steering wheel volume controls go on strike. Thankfully, there's a physical volume knob but you have to remember it's there.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The A6 Sportback E-tron's hatch design offers an excellent 26 cubic feet of space in the trunk, which is larger than the trunks of its rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. There's a small 1-cubic-foot frunk, which could possibly accommodate your charging cable.

Inside the cabin, storage is good but not groundbreaking. You'll find a decently sized bin under the armrest and another in front of the screen for your phone and other miscellaneous items. The door pockets and glovebox are modest in size. It's practical, just not overly generous.

Is it a good value? The Audi A6 Sportback E-tron makes a compelling case by the numbers. While its build quality is solid with tight panel gaps, it feels slightly less luxurious than it should — not quite BMW or Mercedes polish level, but still a perfectly fine premium sedan for daily driving. Where it truly shines is its tech-for-the-price proposition: super fast charging, superior range, and unique features like matrix LED headlights and a switchable glass roof. Crucially, it delivers all this while undercutting rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz on price. A solid warranty and a year of free charging sweeten the deal.

Range/Efficiency/Charging

How are the range and efficiency? The EPA estimates range for the A6 Sportback E-tron at between 333 miles and 392 miles on a full charge, depending on whether you opt for the all-wheel-drive or the rear-wheel-drive model. In our testing, the Audi didn't just meet those numbers; it blew right past them. We piloted an AWD model to an impressive 392 miles (60 miles over its EPA estimate) and took the RWD version an even more remarkable 402 miles.

It's a similar story with efficiency. The AWD model is EPA-rated to use 32 kWh of electricity for every 100 miles of driving, but we saw a stellar 26.3 kWh/100 miles. (Unlike mpg, the lower the kWh figure, the better your efficiency is.) The RWD model was even thriftier, recording 25.5 kWh/100 miles against its 27-kWh estimate. The A6 Sportback E-tron is also one of the fastest-charging EVs we've ever tested, adding an incredible 775 miles of range per hour. In real-world terms, that means you can add 100 miles of range in under eight minutes.

X factor

The A6 Sportback E-tron's design presents a curious case study. While the concept promised a sleek, futuristic vision, the production model seems to have adopted a different aesthetic. It's almost as if the A6 E-tron used a slightly outdated photo for its dating profile — not quite the tastefully modern form we've come to expect from Audi's design team.

Yet, once you're nestled in the driver's seat, any initial visual misgivings quickly dissipate. The A6 Sportback E-tron is such a surprising pleasure to drive, we question why the Audi S6 even exists. And to add to that, it's a hatchback!
