I had a Q5 coming off lease in July, but with the tariff threat making the car market uncertain I decided to lease a Q6 and lock in my deal now. If the market were like it always has been, would I have chosen the Q6? Honestly, maybe, maybe not.
Here are the pros after a week of driving:
- This is overall a very comfortable, quiet car to drive. We also have a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 … Limited RWD that I absolutely love (and I likely would have gone for a '25 if not for the tariffs), but I have to admit in terms of comfort and composure, the Audi is a step up, as it should be based on the price.
- The 800 volt architecture allows very fast charging and having AC chargers on both sides of the car is a really nice convenience. You can also see battery temperature in the dash which could be useful in cold climates. The range seems solid too, around 300 miles. Note the Ioniq also offers the 800 volt architecture but not the two charge ports - and while it does now have NACS (the Tesla plug), it is on the wrong side. The DC port on the Audi is on the left side, so once it gets NACS access, it will be more compatible with Superchargers.
- I am 6'2" with broad shoulders and size 14 feet. I have gravitated toward VWs/Audis because for whatever reason they tend to be the most comfortable for me and the Q6 fits the bill. It's a little roomier inside than the Q5. I have plenty of head and legroom.
- This is not a sporty car by any means but it feels more confident and like it has higher limits than the Hyundai especially on twisty roads. The 20 inch wheels and massive 285 rear tires are probably why. It's also a bit more nimble and easier to drive in tight parking parking lots.
- The camera system is fantastic. Absolutely get the surround view camera system. It doesn't have the 'drone' view where you can circle around the car but the picture is clearer than I have in the Hyundai or the Q5.
- Power is decent in the RWD. I don't need Quattro and I would prefer the range, but you do sacrifice that extra EV punch.
- Cargo room in the back is solid (30 cubic feet) and it does have a small but usable frunk
- The infotainment/dashboard screens are large, bright and have great resolution.
- The augmented reality heads-up display works well and is useful. Plus, I can even see it with polarized sunglasses which is a rarity.
Now for the downsides...
- I haven't had any serious glitches so far but if you go to Reddit you do see people have infotainment and other issues. This is a very new platform and vehicle and I'm concerned that the kinks have not been fully worked out.
- The infotainment looks great, especially the native nav, but it doesn't feel fully baked. I am never fully sure if Sirius XM will turn on automatically like it has in every car I have owned for the last 18 years. Sometimes it does, sometimes you have to cycle through the audio inputs to get it working. It's odd and annoying.
- You can no longer show the nav in the driver's screen like the old Audi system. They actually reduced the customization of the driver's screen which is kind of a shame.
- The touch controls on the steering wheel can be annoying. I wish they had a setting to only allow an action to take place if you physically pressed the button.
- You can use the steering wheel paddles to adjust regen on the fly but the only way you can do do one-pedal driving is with the 'B' gear selected. The regen is really aggressive this way and I don't love using it. In the Ioniq, you can get max regen by pressing and holding the paddle which is really useful. It actually makes driving the car more engaging and I wish Audi let you do this.
- The only way you can see track/artist info is when you have the radio in the full MMI screen. Otherwise you get channel/album art but the actual text. This is stupid and should be updated
- Too much piano black plastic. I miss the metal trim that my 2017 A4 had. Also, the big blank piano black space where the passenger screen goes on the Prestige is really cheesy. 90% of these won't have that screen. Audi should have done better.
- Cooled seats are still an option (I don't have) on a $70k+ car. My Ioniq has them. I live in a warm climate and would appreciate them.
- It WILL take you some time to get set up and dialed in on this one. I hope over-the-air updates will address some of the quirks/bugs.
Overall I do think this car can be great, but Audi needs to get the details right, especially on the MMI/infotainment. Tech is what really sells this car so the tech better work flawlessly. Right now I can't say that. The luxury side is basically there, just maybe with the next refresh please ditch the piano black and give some brighter color options.
