NHTSA Revises Car Safety Tests; Edmunds.com Comments

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- October 5, 2010 -- Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, reported today that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has revised its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

"It certainly was time to make changes, as automakers have figured out how to ace the government's current testing protocol," explained Edmunds.com Consumer Advice Reporter Ron Montoya in his article detailing the new program at http://edmunds.com/car-safety/nhtsa-revises-five-star-safety-ratings.html. "Most 2010 new car models earned the top rating of five stars when tested, and the rest earned four stars."

"A change in methodology that creates greater variation in the scores will be far more helpful to consumers," stated Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl. "However, the ideal new ratings system would be one that reflects how consumers think about safety, answering the question 'in which vehicles will I mostly likely avoid injury in the event of an accident?' Ratings should be designed to help consumers rank vehicles against this intuitive measure."
