EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

The optional V8 provides much-needed power but the areas of comfort and cargo capacity are where the XC90 shines.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

An available V8 gives the XC90 a much-needed shot of power. The base engine, however, is overwhelmed by the weight of the car. Steering is overboosted, while the vehicle's mass hampers handling. The mass factor also makes both engines thirsty.

Comfort

RATING

Drivers will appreciate the soft, well-countoured seats. Ride comfort is soft and the car cruises quietly. The optional V8 engine note is a welcome surprise but not intrusive.

Function

RATING

Cargo carrying is enhanced by a very flexible seating arrangement. There is a clever third-row flat-fold mechansim and a sliding second row with integrated child seat in the center position. The menu-based audio system is a bit complicated but other controls are good.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The Volvo design theme works well on the XC90, looking equal parts Volvo and SUV. The interior, too, is handsome and well finished.
