I don't know if the transmission problem continued to the 2006's----if it did----and I think 2006 was the last year with the problem---the Volvo dealership absolutely fibbed about the transmission problem. I kept mine in perfect maintenance and did every inspection on time and it made no difference---the transmission was misbuilt for the car and maintaining it perfectly had nothing to do with it. Nothing. As stated---I was on my third ... Read More
I just bought a 2006 2.5t xc90 with 70,000 and am in love! Paid only $17k from a mazda dealership and had it inspected by a volvo dealership before I bought it. Volvo dealership said the 2.5t is bulletproof if you keep up with the maintenance.
I own a 2006 2.5T xc90 with 70,000 miles, and it has been a great car. The 2.5T and all other volvo 5 cylinder engines have a great reputation for reliability and longevity. But 2006 was the last year for the 2.5T in the xc90. Most of the bugs were 'worked-out' on the xc90 by 2006. The v8 and 3.2 engines have turned out to be good engines--with good transmissions. The ... Read More
I own a 2006 t6 and at about 40K Miles started making the same noise under same conditions, when cold and accelerating. Once it warms up the noise stops. Volvo dealer in Athens Greece told me it is the joint between the front axle and the wheel. This joint has ball bearings.. these wear out after X years/miles... simply because they are under-speced.... this is a matter of personal non-expert opinion ... Read More
I did get the issue resolved but it was a pain. The ignition switch went out, and the parts are only available from Europe at Volvo's main warehouse. So, it took almost a week to fix. We were out of town (500 miles from home). The Volvo dealer in Des Moines gave us a loaner to drive back east, then they had the car transported back to our house. Fortunately it ... Read More
This happened in my 2006 Volvo xc90. We added freon and it cooled off on my side but makes a really loud noise when the ac cycles on and off in idle positions. Did you solve your issue??
Hi there, (to fourwheelride) I am in the process of replacing tires on my 2006 XC90 V8 AWD and am probably going to purchase the Michelin Latitudes as well. I just wanted to check with you to find out how they performed since you have had them for over a year now. Thanks for the input; I appreciate it! By the way, I am guessing from your posts that you have ... Read More
I recently purchased a 2006 XC90 T6 auto from a reputable dealer in Brookvale, NSW with 77000km on the clock. Two days later, I got the Transmission Service Urgent Light appear. The dealer stated that the problem was probably a glitch in one of the sensors but ... Read More
If it makes you feel any better, we did the same thing except the mileage was about 26,000. We opted for the extended warranty based on the recommendation of our mechanic who LOVES these cars. He recommended the warranty based on the fact that the computer components are costly if they should fail. BTW, he only works on BMWs and Volvos. We bought our 2006 V8 in January '09; I believe ... I'm going through the same problem that you did. My transmission cooler ruptured and there was cross talk between the cooling lines and the transmission. They really are stepping up for me and I appreciate ... Read More
Question I am hoping someone here can answer for us... We own a 2006 XC90; it's a Limited Edition Volvo Ocean Race. Recently we had minor repair work done to one of the side doors. I need information....(2005 T6 XC90) I am meeting with a volvo Rep on Monday. They are going to hook up to my car some meter that records the sounds of my engine as it shifts or the lack of shifting between gears. Thank you for your post in response to my comment. Actually, I have found my XC90 to be a terrific vehicle .... wonderful driving characteristics and, of course, the confidence of Volvo safety. I have only had a few service issues - AWD loss and upper suspension arm replacement beside the typical tire wear,of course. (I am driving on Bridgestones after Pirelli and Michelins) I have also been careful to have ... Read More
I found out this is true. Volvo went back to improved to a six gear tronic, something like that-that could handle the tourque of this engine. They even have gotten rid of the turbo's in the v6's stating the car doesn't need it-wonder if that has to do with the standard transmission too. Hopefully, if Volvo is smart, they are replacing ours with the newer version. I asked and the Volvo ... Read More
After reading countless posts regarding faulty, defective transmissions, it appears that they all seem to occur in 2005 and earlier modal years. This would "square" with my understanding that Volvo redesigned the transmission for 2006 which corrected the earlier years inherent weaknesses. The "track record" satisfaction reports for 2006 appear very good....look at Edmunds ratings which shows that transmissions get high marks or, at least, not a significant issue for 2006 ... Read More
Well you would be paying about 5.52 percent and the residual for me would be a deal breaker. True the discount offsets some of that but still payments are way too high for a 42K car. Unfortunately Volvo can't afford to subsidize or inflate residuals because they got burned on some the leases in 2006-2008 that had overinflated residuals and near zero financing. Went through the same thing a year ago. ... Read More
I just got the same news on my 2006 Volvo XC90 as well. My car has only 60,000 miles but suddenly my transmission service required light came on yesterday and I took the car immediately to the dealership to find out that I needed an entirely new transmission. Volvo already replaced my radiator while the car was under warranty and i had complained that the transmission seemed to not catch when ... Read More
bertxc90, Sorry to hear of your transmission troubles-most of us have been there. I agree, unfortunately, if Volvo won't issue a recall-as that would admit a failure-it's easier for companies to deal with the onsie twosie's as they come up. Part of my plan was involving the NTSB-who will record the numbers and could actually have some leverage to get Volvo to do something. I can only hope and pray that ... Read More

Jeremy, I am sorry to hear that you have joined the club. Volvo has sworn over-and-over that the transmission problem was limited to the 2003 through 2005 models. They send they re-designed them and stopped getting them from GM in 2005. I guess not, now that the 2006's are getting up in years and mileage. Good luck with Volvo Cars of North America, we have one of the first 2003 XC90s ... Read More

I have a 2006 xc90 V8 awd. The 37,500 maintenance was $435 at Power Volvo Irvine (California). I bought the vehicle as a CPO vehicle in January this year. Hope this helps.
Apparently free downloads of Volvo owner manuals has gone away, unless they are available through The Vine. Your link seems to indicate that the brake fluid and air filter are inspect and replace if needed items. Labor rates come from the usual flat rate books that most garages use to estimate jobs. Chellgrl, the True Cost to Own tool will let you compare maintenance costs against other vehicles.
This is kind of an old topic, but I wanted to bring it up again. I have a 2006 XC90 (not the v8) with about 30k miles. Musty smell would run for several mins and then mostly go away. First ... Read More
Thanks, according to edmunds, mine should run 71 bucks but that doesnt speak to Air Filter Cartridge Replacement and brake fluid replacement, both mentioned in the service manual. http://pa.motorwebs.com/volvo/2006_maint.pdf So not sure thats very accurate. The labor rate is totally wrong. Their labor rate is way too low, thats what I should get charged for doing it myself.

The Edmunds Maintenance Guide will tell you what Volvo recommends be done and it'll estimate what the service should cost in your zip code. You may decide to do more than what's recommended by Volvo, but remember that most service writers work on commission and they'll try to upsell you on stuff that may not be needed. The 37.5k service for my zip should cost $59. :)

Loyalty+Gift card+Costco applies to 08 and 09 models. 2- I would suggest anyone who is thinking about buying/financing an 09 XC90 to lease it first then buy it. Galves trade-in value on that car is $11K. I'd pass. If you shop around you should be able to get one with Premium and AWD for near that asking price. The 2.5T has not had any major issues. It's a solid engine, albeit a little underpowered for the vehicle.

Well, you'll get some differing opinions here. You really should drive both and decide which engine you prefer and if the added price of the '07 is worth it to you. I can't speak to the longevity of the 3.2, but I've heard good things. The 2.5T is a proven and trusted engine from Volvo.

Chances are, the wheel is bent or cracked in some way. It will be very hard to convince Volvo Cars that this is a defect.
this could be tough. it does seem like you have a wheel problem. Whether or not you can get it covered is the tough part. I would be emphatic. Call corporate if need be. I have 2006 XC90 T-5, 9000 Miles, and the car last night drained the battery. I called Volvo On Call to come and jump start it. Scheduled appointment with dealership. Any suggestions what should I tell them (because when I called them the guy sounded like it was my fault)? Anyone having the same problem? Was it fixed and what was done? Thanks
I have a 2006 7 seater with rear audio controls, no rear dvd though. 7000K miles since march 06. Let me know if interested. Integrated bluetooth as well as cargo cover for the rear (hard plastic fitted volvo cargo cover). Black on tan leather.

Hey Volvo owners! While having my 2006 XC90's battery checked here yesterday, my service tech seemed quite surprised that he couldn't find my VIN (vehicle identification number) anywhere in the drivers' door area. I did some investigating and then contacted my Volvo dealership an hour or two ago. My service manager told me he checked and found NONE of the '06 stock there had VIN numbers in the drivers' door. Problem? ... Read More
2006 Volvo Ocean Race XC90s and XC70s..... GORGEOUS, powerful vehicles, fully loaded, NOT cheap price tags. There were only 600 VOR XC70s made, and 800 XC90's. I don't think they are all just in the U.S, but not sure on this. Island2 seems to have had lots of issues with his/her XC90. Actually, there SHOULD just be 799 XC90's out there, unless Volvo re-sold number 612? They took it when it ... Read More
"run away from Volvos...their technicians cannot investigate/trouble-shoot/fix these newer cars." SOOOOO true!! The first 2006 limited edition (Ocean Race) XC90 I had kept dying out in my garage after being parked for 24 hours or so. "Special" New Jersey techs couldn't detect, or eliminate electrical issue draining the battery, so dealership gave me a replacement VOR XC90. Here in MD, it was on the verge of becoming an official lemon anyway. ... Read More
My wife picked up a nail on her 2006 XC 90. I looked at the front tire and noticed significant tread wear. The car has 14,000 miles on these tires and I doubt they will lat to 17,000 miles. Needless to say I am not getting these Pirelli Scorpions again. ANyone have any recommendations on some good replacement tires. Durability is my primary consideration. My wife could drive o ver a ... I have a 2006 w/2.5T and have been very happy with it. No issues to date, but still only at ~7000 miles. I would think you could find a closeout on a new '06 for what a used '05 would likely run if you aren't fussy about options. A base XC90 should be in the +/-30k neighborhood and they're nicely equipped from the start. The XC90 is our 3rd Volvo, and ... Read More

I actually bought my 2006 XC90 from Winnipeg because that is where I live now and they gave me a way better price. I did email all the dealers in Southern Ontario and only a handful emailed me back. Their pricing was way higher than what I was offered in Winnipeg. We bought the 2.5T with luxury and convenience packages and paid about $53000 +tax.
