Volvo XC90 T6 Transmission

  • re: XC90 Transmission [goldentix]

Written by: usvortec on Jan 20, 2013 1:10:01 AM

Sorry I put 2006 but it is a 2004 xc90 T6. Only has 92k miles and massive oil leak on right side. Tranny seems not to downshift, check eng light on and pulled 8 error codes. Crazy that Volvo would sell junk like this! This has been my Girlfriends dream car. Not sure what to do from here. Thank you.

Was your Volvo a red 2006 T6? I hope so cause My girlfriend just bought one and has tranny prob with only 92k miles. Trying to find the original owner to find out if extended warranty was bought on the vehicle. It was bought in 2004 at Santa Monica and traded in some where in 2010 or 2011.

Get the phone number for the head office and tell them your situation and be firm that you want Volvo to pay for BOTH parts and labour. This is a well documented fact that they put in a faulty tranny and by no means should a car of this class have a transmission blow up at under 100km or 100 miles. I don't know if the transmission problem continued to the 2006's----if it did----and I think 2006 was the last year with the problem---the Volvo dealership absolutely fibbed about the transmission problem. I kept mine in perfect maintenance and did every inspection on time and it made no difference---the transmission was misbuilt for the car and maintaining it perfectly had nothing to do with it. I own a 2006 2.5T xc90 with 70,000 miles, and it has been a great car. The 2.5T and all other volvo 5 cylinder engines have a great reputation for reliability and longevity. But 2006 was the last year for the 2.5T in the xc90. Most of the bugs were 'worked-out' on the xc90 by 2006. The v8 and 3.2 engines have turned out to be good engines--with good transmissions. This would "square" with my understanding that Volvo redesigned the transmission for 2006 which corrected the earlier years inherent weaknesses. The Edmunds Maintenance Guide will tell you what Volvo recommends be done and it'll estimate what the service should cost in your zip code. You may decide to do more than what's recommended by Volvo, but remember that most service writers work on commission and they'll try to upsell you on stuff that may not be needed. The 37.5k service for my zip should cost $59. :)

Back on that engine thing, I have pondered the reflash, too, but the more I drive it, the more I feel its unnecessary. From about 10 mph up, that truck builds speed real quick. I say this because I drive it every day and that's how I find it. ;) Some of it is probably just turbo lag off the line, but 208hp and 4,500 lbs curb weight is never going to make for a highly spirited performer. Not that this is the primary selling point of the vehicle, obviously. Anyway, once I'm out of warranty next year, I'll flash the ECU up to 260hp ... Read More

I don't get why some folks say this. What kind of vehicle are we comparing it to? Out of all our SUVs (Forester, Pilot, Pacifica), our 2.5T AWD XC90 is the fastest, hands down. I have to be careful with the pedal, as a matter of fact, to prevent chirping the tires (once past the turbo lag) when accelerating and turning at the same time. But, because I hear this stated ... Galves trade-in value on that car is $11K. I'd pass. If you shop around you should be able to get one with Premium and AWD for near that asking price. The 2.5T has not had any major issues. It's a solid engine, albeit a little underpowered for the vehicle.

I'm considering buying this model from dealer. It is Volvo Certified, has 40K miles. Does NOT have leather, heated seats, sunroof, seven passenger seating. Also it is a 2 wheel drive model. Dealer wants $18,800. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also has this model had the transmission problems (I think those were primarily on the T6 models).
