I bought my 2003 XC90 T6 from Byers Volvo in the Columbus, OH area. It had 48,572 miles at time of purchase. At just under 78,000 miles I was driving through a Wal-Mart parking lot in winter & the "Transmission Service Urgent" light came on. Before I made it to the road, the vehicle stopped accelerating & I had to have it towed to Byers. They checked it out & of ... Read More
Hello there. I desperately need some advise. I own a 2005 Volvo XC90 purchased in 2009 in NJ. It wasn't bought from a Volvo dealership so I don't know if I am covered in anything. As many of you there, my transmission gave out at 86,000 miles and tech at Volvo Dealership insisted that I need a new transmission which will cost about $7000. I didn't know that this type of ... Hi, I had the transmission replaced to my 2003 XC90 at 95,000 miles. I took the car to be looked at at Smythe Volvo in Summit, New Jersey. They said a new transmission would cost $5K. The transmission on my 2004 T6 was replaced twice by the dealership, Don Beyer Volvo of Falls Church, Virginia, under my warranty and service contract. High quality, similarly sized loaners are generally available, especially with reservations. Loaners are usually new cars, with a ... Read More
no, they don't require old parts. They haven't asked for our old parts. However we have been involved for over a year now so I don't know. My story is that I bought a 2003 xc90 in 2007 from a reputable dealer. 1 month after purchasing the car the transmission fails. The dealership only had a 30 day warranty and the car had 40 thousand miles so the factory warranty wasn't ... Read More

I am about to pull the trigger on a 2004 XC90 w/ the T6 tranny. Looks like this has a very high percentage rate of failure. I currently have a 2003 5 cylinder w/ 105K miles that I got used at 65K. I am having the exact same problem. That horrible "transmission service urgent" message appeared while driving home. I have a 2003 XC90 with 109,000 miles. If you go to a larger size of tire Volvo will not warranty the tires nor any other problem with tire wear or alignment issue. I now have close to 21000 on my Scorpion Zeros and plenty of road wear left. Rotation is the key I think. I am driving one of the first XC90 delivered in Europe. I actually have driven about 96.000 km (55.ooo miles) in Europe. Since End of January 2003 there have been changed 5 bearings allready. Yust yesterday my wife had the worst possible experiance: the left back trie stuck during (slow) drive totally. I am happy that did not happen on the motorway. As I have quite good industry contacts I got ... Read More
Our 2003 XC90 has 43K miles on it. We leased the car new and have suffered one problem after another. In addition to the safety recalls, we have had to have the car in for problems with the parking brake failing to disengage (the beginning of a long line of brake problems), the reservoir for the washer fluid leaking, various leaking hoses, euro rail vibration noise, exhaust system supports needing to be ... You didn't mention your market area, after several weeks of looking within 750 mile radius of Tucson, I just bought a 03 T6 in Las Vegas with 65k miles, certified, 100k warranty and all options less the 3rd seat for $28,900. One thing to pass on, Volvo of Las Vegas was absolutely stellar on the customer service end. When I noticed the transmission oil was looking in need of change, they ... Read More
Wow, that's like 90 miles a day! I have heard of people who commute over a hundred miles every work day but I'm not sure I would want their used car. With that kind of mileage I would have it thoroughly inspected, including things like the bevel gears, bushings and joints. And get an extended warranty, for sure. Volvo's website has VIN and VIC decoders under Owner's Info, Search Library. AFAIK ... Read More
Hey all, new guy on the block about to pick up a 2003 XC90 T6. The wife and I have driven Volvos for the last 15 years, from the 700 series through the current 960. I am not so keen on losing the 960 (shoulda kept the 940 too) but the wife is seriously drooling over the prospects of that XC90. The question of the day is, having seen a great ... Read More
Does 59% residual/MF .00307/10K miles through Volvo Finance or 54% residual/MF .0028/12K miles through Chase sound right? Dealer told me there is $3,000 cash back from Chase. The residual seems to be low and MF is definetely high. On my current XC70 residual was 59% (in 2003) for 36 month lease and MF was around .0016. Should I wait for 2007 model and get a better deal? Will the residual be ... Read More
Having many problems with this car. Local Volvo Dealer no help. Been sitting in Volvo dealer in another city for over 2 months. At just over 50K miles, one turbo blew. Then within next year and 20k mi, 2nd turbo blew and engine blew. All with proper vehicle maintanence and documentation. Cost to repair quoted over $10k -- Volvo NA not helpful. Anyone else experienced these type of problems? Anyone have ... Read More
Purchased a 2006 XC90 2.5T AWD in sept. 2005, have 5000 miles on it and have had ZERO problems with it. Its also great in the snow,I take it out just to joy ride around when the weather is really stinko, I try to get it stuck and look for the worst conditions I can find,It has not let me down yet. I also find the 2.5T engine delivers all the ... Read More
The things you mention are either minor fixes or wear-and-tear items. Disappointing, as you say, but not unexpected since the '03 T6 was Version 1.0 of the XC90. What did you want Volvo USA to do? The main thing in this case is dealer service and it sounds like they could be better but are Ok. FWIW I've had an '04 2.5T for 2-1/2 years with none of the problems you ... Read More
I have been a Volvo fan since I learned to drive on my parents' cool red 1969 Volvo sedan (it was 8 years old when I learned to drive and lived a good 10 more years in our family). My husband surprised me on my birthday with a beautiful new XC90. I have had the car for 2 1/2 years, and it has been one issue after another. Wheel bearings, shocks, ... Read More
I am having the identical problems with my 2003 XC90. My anti skid service light is coming on, the vehicle is idling different at odd times, and now 3 times in the past two months, the car will not start. A message that indicates "Immobilizer" see owners manual is showing on the dash. Can you tell me more about who you worked with- the dealership or Volvo Consumer affairs, to get ... Read More
We have had a myriad of problems with our 2003 XC90. After complaining for two years , we asked Volvo to replace the car with a new vehicle for the remainder of the lease. I even offered to accept a less expense model than an XC90. Volvo came back and offered to put us in a new lease on a new XC90 for 3 years with a lease payment that was ... Read More
I have had the 2003 XC90 for over 1 year now and completed proper servicing as scheduled. I have had a Turbo go bad at about 50,000. At 72,000 I take the vehicle back to the shop because it is putting out smoke through the exhaust. Initially they tell me the other Turbo needs to be replaced and then they come back and tell me the engine is blown also. I ... Read More
As far as swapping, most dealers agree to help each other out and trade cars if requested. No additional costs will be accrued-if it must be driven any distance, though,a man will have to be paid to fetch it...That might make your dealer want to wrap that cost in the size of the discount he offers you. As far as additional warranties,I admit I am not sure. some say that any European car ... Read More

Currently have a 2000 TLC and a 2003 540i - wife drives the BMer and now wants something more practical for hauling the baby and the dogs around in. We live in Central Ohio - i.e snow for 4 months of the year, so AWD is the thing she is looking for. Previously looked at the 1st Gen X5 back in 2000, but went with the TLC - have since driven ... those early 2003's had a bunch of problems. My 04 has been pretty much rock solid and my experience on Volvo bulletin boards leaves me convinced that problem cars are very rare. Sorry, sounds like you got a dud.
This is my first time to the XC90 posting and I have read a few of the postings. Well lets put it this way, I will probably not buy another XC90 after the incidental and now major problems I am having with this vehicle. The cupholder up front is a real work of art(repaired twice), had to have a wheel hub replaced, have told the dealer numerous times(before my warranty was ... Read More
We are not that far from the MTSU campus. It sounds like you have yourself a first-class dealership. We bought our XC90 from Darrell Waltrip Volvo in Franklin in Nov. of 2003. I am pleased with the vehicle. My wife is the primary driver and she loves it.
The MDX is better than the X5 from 30-60 you are right, but 0-30 the X5 smokes the MDX(because the MDX, and Ody's Vtech engine really gets going with the higher revs) 0-30 and the 350 smokes them both. Are you sure it's just not a perception? Even a conservative publication like Consumer Reports timed the 2003 MDX's 0-30 as 3.0 seconds, and the 2005 X3 3.0 at the same 3.0 ... Read More
Recently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety(www.iihs.org) published its latest list of Fatality Rates for individual model cars up to 2003. Unfortunately, the XC 90 was too new to be listed. I don't think they often publish this list either - the last one was for models from 1994-1997. Rates are listed in deaths/million registered vehicle years, overall, as well as broken down by type of accident - in general, it ... Read More
XC90, Nautic Blue, Versatility, NAV, Prem, all options :) I have had my XC90 since March 2003, haven't had any problems. From what I have read on this post, most of the problems are not resolved by the dealers. This is unfortunate, but should not reflect on the XC90. I am lucky, I have a very good Tech at the dealership I take my XC90 to, plus having owned another volvo, ... Read More
