Summary

What Edmunds.com says

Comfortable, safe and roomier than most other luxury-brand wagons in its price range, the V70 is a smart choice in family transportation. Just be sure to take it easy on the options.

Pros

Superb comfort, wide variety of safety and luxury features, balanced ride and handling characteristics, available all-wheel drive.

Cons

Gets expensive when you start adding options, tight rear legroom, turbo lag and torque steer in T5 model.

What's New for 2004

Last year's 2.4T model is now the 2.5T, with the same 208-horsepower engine as the AWD model. New option packages for the 2.5T include Convenience and Special Titanium trim packages -- both bundle a wide variety of desirable features, but the latter includes distinctive exterior cosmetic touches as well. Finally, bi-xenon headlights are now optional while the top-line Dolby audio system has been upgraded with more speakers and greater amplification.

Review

This car is a great all purpose vehicle and HIGH performance for the money. Where can you get a car that will exceed 140 mph and transport 10ft pieces of pipe inside with 4 people. The ride is as good as the road you are driving on!! You have the feel of control at all speeds. The factor of Safety was never lost with this car. This is my fifth Volvo since 1988. The wagon V70R is a sleeper on the road.

Favorite Features

I like the style of the body and comfortable interior. The gear-tronics trany is fun. Being able to decide to pass that other car or just get out of there with just a push of the petal.

Suggested Improvements

The turning radius is too large. The gear-tronic should shift faster. Add rear heated seats. Aux. input to radio for MP3 player.

Review

Sometimes there is a bright and fun momemt when I remember what this car will do. Mostly it is used in normal service where it functions admirably. But when it has the opportunity it is a brilliant and extremely well balanced road car. I love it. My only complaint is that Volvo-Ford copped out on the interior stuff--too much plastic especially.

Favorite Features

Handling and road performance.

Suggested Improvements

Larger rear view mirrors with exterior turn signals. The turning radius is extraordinarily large for a car of this size but maybe this is the price of the AWD.

Review

Beautiful car. Very comfortable. Fun to drive. Unfortunately, the engine would stall periodically and unpredictably. The dealer could never fix it and ignored the techical service bulletins I found on line describing the behavior. Huge blind spots that made merging with traffic a white knuckle experience. MPG could have been better. Vehicle maintenance was outrageously expensive.

Favorite Features

Seats. Turbo. Brakes. On road stability. Appearance. "Switchblade" key.

Suggested Improvements

Fix the engine so it does not stall (this is a big deal). Most manufacturers have mastered this element.

Review

First the negatives: wide turning radius and poorly designed interface of the "premium" sound system. Otherwise this attractive, well built wagon has served our family well. It's 300hp still obtains 22mpg in city driving and 28mpg in 70mph freeway driving.

Favorite Features

Third row seat for our children.

Suggested Improvements

1) Outsource the sound system, e.g. the Bose media system; 2) in view of fuel prices, give us a turbo- diesel.
