I have a 2003 v70 wagon (loaded, with winter package)-almost 100K miles - For no apparent reason, the fuel/temp gauges move back and forth, all dash lights disappear, the digital clock speeds ahead, the "no seatbelt" chime starts, the doors start to unlock and lock repeatedly, interior turn signal lights fail to come on, but the signals still work on the exterior (thank goodness!) - cig lighter dead as a door ... Lulu 4: I have 2005 V70 with 120K miles on it. I Just purchased an XC90 last week; have had 2 s60's a 2003 and 2002. All these vehicles are top notch. I drive the v70 and I MAINTAIN it. Like the law man said above these cars are bullet proof (pun intended). They will last as long as you care for them by the maintenance schedule. A Volvo with 75K ... Read More

I cannot speak for 98 V70 - I owned a 2003 V70 wagon with turbo (2.4T) - we traded a 95 960 sedan and a 95 960 wagon - big mistake. By June of 08 at 28974 miles - its started failing apart faster than I could get it fixed. June 08 - $716 - replaced fuel pump assy and o rings - gas odor so bad afraid to park it ... Read More
My problem is similar but not identical to others here. I have a 2003 V70 with 135,000 miles. I have had intermittant starter issues which I thought were resolved when they found and tightened a loose wire. Simultaneously, I have suspected transmission problems because of little jerks when pulling out from a stop and making turns. Also, I have spinning clock issues. Intermitently, the digital clocks spins for about 2 minutes ... Read More
Hello, I have a 2003 V70 with about 120k miles on it that just started doing the exact same thing. I have a volvo mechanic who I trust and he can't figure out what it could be. Did you figure yours out? My husband is also suspecting software.
Think you are right - if consumers reports mean anything , the 2002 and 2003 V70 are solid black for suspension related issues among others . Its pretty much a Toyota Venza , or Highlander . Gut tells me to buy American like a Ford but they are essentially the people who tell me to go to hell. GM has nothing I like . OK maybe a rear wheel drive Cadillac ... Read More
My V70 is 2002, but problems almost identical, plus right front axle, door locks go up and down as they please, right turn signal stop cooperating, cigarette outlets don't work (yes, I did check fuse), car is shaking at 60 miles per hour (nobody can find problem) and finaly I can't get more then 15000 to18000 miles on top line tires, tire shop keep telling me it is VOLVO vag, they ... I do not "routinely carry heavy loads " unless you count a weeks groceries for two people. About every month I bring home about 105 lbs of cat litter in a 3 mile trip . I once carried a 80 lb dishwasher (thats why I like the Volvo back door - most "crossover SUV's " are arranged so you cant get a 27 by 32 inch box in ) I had ... Read More
Fuel pump issue is common to Volvo and other cars. The other issues you have are related to living in Phx. The heat just kills the rubber bushings in the torque mounts and suspension parts. It is a little odd that the radiator and door lock went out. Shocks are probably a time issue, they don't last forever. Especially if you routinely carry heavy loads in the cargo area.
Well ,most of you folks have had much better experience that I have . Guess I got a lemon. This vehicle has been maintained per Volvo specs and in addition runs Mobil One approx every 6 months (do it on time rather than miles since it is so low mileage) .In the last year I replaced fuel pump assembly (gas odors so bad scared to put it in garage), $716 plus ... Dsroberts your post caught my attention. I have a 2003 V70 2.4T with 37,000 that I purchased from a Volvo dealer 2 months ago. Soon after, I noticed what can be described as stumble or hesitation between 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. On a moderate acceleration, easing up to a 45 mph speed limit, the transmission will stumble as if it is trying to decide between 4th or 5th. As the ... Read More

I want to add that while antifreeze is toxic, having a leaking heater core which releases antifreeze into the heated air stream is not nearly as hazardous as, for example, an exhaust system leak which releases CO (carbon monoxide) into the passenger compartment. Concerning my 2004 V70 (base model 2.4L non-turbo), which we bought new in Oct 2003, the heater core is not leaking. When I had it in for an ... Read More
Hi stmss, I can see you are a wagon person like me. I think the whole Volvo experience has turned me off to leasing. I have leased many cars (all wagons of course). I've had 3 Audi's among other cars. But you will probably be surprised to know that I found a 2003 Mercury Sable wagon with only 5100 miles on it. For $10600.00 , I own the car , insurance ... That sounds about right for the tranny. I paid $235 to have my 2003 V70 wagon flushed at a Volvo dealer and I am told it is smart for them to add more fluid to the flush and ensure a cleaner result. Motor mounts are another thign altogether... Goo dluck! Vibe
Drats! My heart sank as I read all these postings about Volvo transmission issues. I recently purchased a 2003 V70 and soon noticed it would "flare" between 2nd and 3rd gears. I had them flush the tranny and it seemed to work great for awhile, but the flares are returning. I log lots of miles as an outside sales rep and I am concerned I will be stranded far from home. ... Does this vehicle have dynamic stability control? If so, is the stability control calibrated to work with a certain size tire/wheel combo? OE on my 2004 base 168 hp V70 was 195/65-15, which at 25.0 inches, is almost the same overall diameter as the 235/45-17 (25.3 in), and as the proposed 215/50-17 (25.5 in). I think the base OE size got changed to 205/55-16 (24.9 in). Why did Volvo increase the ... Read More
Hi I am debating between a 2002/2003 volvo v70 or xc70, it there a difference between the seats for these models. From the test drives, I found seats of xc70 to be more comfortable than v70, is there really a difference? Thanks
Hi. My husband and I have been shopping for a new vehicle. I have been researching the V70 and found a used 2003 model in our price range 15-22k. My concerns are 1.buying a used car period. 2.are volvo repairs affordable for a poor working class family?? I will appreciate any comments and insights.
Wow, I guess it isn't just Volvo. All 2001 cars have defective transmissions! From the NHTSA website... 2001 Lexus RX300: "Transmission went out on a busy interstate at night with myself, my husband and our 8 month old daughter. The 2004 V70 manual (pg 84) states,"Volvo engines are designed for optimum performance on unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of AKI 91 or above. . . It is unfortunate that you need to be worried about reliability with any car so new, and of course for the money Volvos cost, perfection (or close to it) both in the product and service, should be expected. I don't think I'm unduly biased, but I do sell Volvos for a living...That said,I think the V70 is the jewel of the Volvo line....It's ALMOST as roomy as the S80,but has a smaller, easier to park and maneuver exterior. VW is no service picnic either. In fact they are horrible! The 2000 V70 XC used a different coupling than the 2001-2003 models. Haldex was used starting in 2004.
