I posted earlier "Cross-Roads" about my 2002 V70 transmission beginning to have few problems slipping and making hard shifts. As I continued to ponder about getting rid of it, a weird set of events occured that might be a solution/answer to the problem of our beloved Volvos :) . For years I was only driver of my car, my wife drove occasionally to pick up large packages or a carpool. During ... Read More
Lulu 4: I have 2005 V70 with 120K miles on it. I Just purchased an XC90 last week; have had 2 s60's a 2003 and 2002. All these vehicles are top notch. I drive the v70 and I MAINTAIN it. Like the law man said above these cars are bullet proof (pun intended). They will last as long as you care for them by the maintenance schedule. A Volvo with 75K ... Read More
From reading these posts, it is obvious that there are known transmission issues for Volvos in the 2002 range. I wish I had read these 4 days ago!! I feel duped by a used car dealer… is it possible for someone to somehow temporarily mask any transmission issues just long enough to get it sold? A little background info… On the afternoon of Monday, March 14, 2011, I test drove a ... Read More
This started happening to us 12 months ago - first attempt by Volvo agent was just to replace fluid 12 months ago - problem presisted. Ours is an 2002 V70T5 with (just) 90K miles on clock Just taken it in again and they say full replacement of transmission is only option. Have only checked this evening - and it is quite unbelievable as to how many threads and posts on different ... Read More
Yes, the volvo dealer had the same conclusion. My repair bill was similar to yours. I must say the car is running better since the part was changed. I am looking for a 2010 V70 having a lot of trouble finding one. Any info about how they are doing and how to find one?
I have the same problem in my 2004 V70R wagon. I just recieved it back from the Volvo service center in RI. and they diagnosised the faulty dash lighting as a malfunctioning dash instrument computer module. To replace the part with a new one will cost $900.00 for the cpu part than the installation fee of another $200.00 for a grand total of $1100.00. It is a lot of money but ... Read More
Apologies for the double, but I did find some useful info about the keys while looking something else up on the Volvo website... Volvo Smart Key Technology Update for Volvo Model Year Vehicles 2002-2010 You can also obtain additional or duplicate remote control keys from certain independent repair facilities and locksmiths that are qualified to make remote control keys. Each key must be programmed to work with your vehicle. A list ... Read More
That 2001 V70 AWD is STILL available at this time. I did pay a visit yesterday to the business here in my hometown and speak with the owner and I could sense how much pride he has in his business. He has 2 salespeople there who do NOT work on commission. He took me out on the lot and showed me what he has to offer. He has about 5 V70's, ... Read More
Hi, Sonofadocker, it has been a few months since I originally posted my question on this Volvo model. I will not pursue the one I first spoke of- the 99' V70 XC Cross country. I went down to the lot back in early November and asked to see it up close, and it is pretty rough. They must have had a dog inside and it is full of dog hair, the ... Read More
Boohoo, unfortunately my car isn't driven very often so the years in warranty passed quicker than the miles. I don't think it's unreasonable to complain about a transmission that failed at 35,000 miles, even if my car was all of 6 years old. BTW, my car now has 49,000 miles on it and the replaced transmission is starting to make the same noises as the other transmission did before it died. ... Read More
I'm trying to help out an old high school friend of mine with her car problem. She's a single mom (actually a 35-year old widow) and has already spent a ridiculous amount of money taking her car to the service department at the local Volvo dealer with no resolution! Her car is a 2002 V70 2.4T with only 82,000 miles on it. The problem occurs when you open the throttle over ... Read More
I'm the original owner of my 2002 V70 with 87K miles. Two weeks ago the instrument cluster started failing intermittently. The car always runs fine mechanically. One day all gauges are dead, the next day they work, the following day multiple warning lights (nearly all on the cluster) start coming on randomly and going away in seconds while driving. My independent Volvo mechanic in the Chicago area said this is the ... Read More
I read on a previous post that Palisades Volvo in either NY or NJ is covering all transmission failures for Volvo NA. I heard that they are trying to keep it "hush hush", so you've got to push them hard on the issue. Good luck.
My V70 with 123,000 miles now (about 50k of those are mine) sits at the dealer, awaiting a "new" transmission. It was there about a month ago and got the famous software update that potentially might have resolved the problem. (Which was mysterious downshifting at odd times, and more often, "clunking" into gear when shifting from reverse to drive, or when accelerating out of a turn.) From the description, the update ... Think you are right - if consumers reports mean anything , the 2002 and 2003 V70 are solid black for suspension related issues among others . Its pretty much a Toyota Venza , or Highlander . My V70 is 2002, but problems almost identical, plus right front axle, door locks go up and down as they please, right turn signal stop cooperating, cigarette outlets don't work (yes, I did check fuse), car is shaking at 60 miles per hour (nobody can find problem) and finaly I can't get more then 15000 to18000 miles on top line tires, tire shop keep telling me it is VOLVO vag, they ... The fix depends on how long the problem has been going on. If in fact you have the issue of the engine surging between gears and then clunking into the next higher gear. There's a good chance that you'll need the entire transmission replaced as well as the TCM (transmission control module). There is also an upgrade for the TCM that sometimes helps to "fix" this problem. It's part #30677036. Whether ... Read More
I own a Volvo V70 2.4T with 70,000 miles. I have experienced intermittent transmission problems for about 3 months. Dealership provided the usual doubletalk and did the software download others on this site have talked about. Since then (about a month ago the transmission seems worse. On 2 or 3 occasions recently I have started the car and noticed that instead of seeing a "P" illuminated in the dashboard there is ... Read More
I am new to this forum but I have 2 Volvo's. A 1994 850Glt with 230,000 and a 2002 V70 with 93,000 m. My experience is NEVER take it to the dealer. The dealer is not your friend. Also, NEVER buy a new one. Aside from that, I run the cheapest M/S tires I can find on the 850. I run Kelly M/S on the V70. They are one notch up ... Read More
I have a 2002 V70 2.4T. There is a strange rattle coming from underneath the car. It sounds like a loose exhaust pipe rattling against the car. It is especially bad when the car is cold and becomes less when the car warms up but any bump or pothole brings it back. The dealer cannot replicate but they also could not replicate the thumping noise when my back wheel bearings where ... Read More
I think that the V70 needs more power (apparently a six is coming in 08) and much less front wheel drive bias. You drive an '01 XC don't you? The "front wheel drive bias" talk tipped me off, and I saw some of your other posts. You've got a bit less power than I do, and 200-300 pounds more vehicle, so no wonder you're wanting more power. The V70 2.5T doesn't ... Read More
I have a 2002 XC70 and my transmission was just replaced at 102k and $4700 LATER. The transmission shop notified me that a software update was due as well for $295 from the dealer for the transmission. Hi I am debating between a 2002/2003 volvo v70 or xc70, it there a difference between the seats for these models. From the test drives, I found seats of xc70 to be more comfortable than v70, is there really a difference? Thanks
I've been keeping a close eye on my front brake pads for the past few months. Well, our 2004 V70 passed 45,000 miles 2 weeks ago and I finally decided to do the service. My local dealership wanted $800 to do the 45,000 mile scheduled maintenance - and that didn't include the brakes. Needless to say, I wasn't going to pay that! I bought 6 quarts of Mobil 1 10W-40 synthetic ... Read More
Wow, I guess it isn't just Volvo. All 2001 cars have defective transmissions! From the NHTSA website... 2001 Lexus RX300: "Transmission went out on a busy interstate at night with myself, my husband and our 8 month old daughter. Yes the cd player is covered under warranty. Warranty is 4 yrs/50K I take it that you didn't buy the car from a Volvo dealer? The brake design on Volvo's is optimized for short stopping distances and rapid heat dissapation. Heat is the enemy of a braking system. The pads are very soft in order to facilitate heat disapation. The rotors are thinner that other car makes in order to do ... Read More
My wife and I just bought a used 2002 v70 with 35k miles on it. We got a good deal, a good trade in, and a great interest rate. We love the car. We have had the car for about a week and the CD player has ceased ... Read More
My wife drives a 2002 Volvo V70 with the touring package (It's as base as they had at the time). We live in Massachusetts and she was pleasantly surprised by it's performance in the winter. This weekend, after driving in a heavy rain, the carpet on the front passenger's side was soaked in our 2002 Volvo V70. I pulled up the carpet but did not find any drainage hoses or anything else that could cause the water ... Read More
Most expensive car to have service done on. 1999-2002 have lawsuits against them regarding the throttle. I would never buy another Volvo again, but I certainly wouldn't buy one that was past warranty. I've put 9,000.00 into my Volvo in the last six months. The car is four !/2 years old. You can read the details about my horrific experience on the message board.
Are you sure it's only with highway driving? Sounds like a problem I had recently on a trip to Dallas from Houston. The airflow gradually decreased to nothing and the whole system shut off. About 15 minutes or so later, the AC came back on full blast. Problem turned out to be the low temp sensor. It didn't tell the compressor to stop cooling, so it ran until the coil froze ... Read More

All I can say is "good luck" with trying to work with Volvo on the surging problem. Our leased 2002 Cross Country (our 5th Volvo product) began to do this about 18 months ago. wasn't planning on writing to anyone till I saw your letter. I hope that I'm not too late. DO NOT BUY THAT CAR. We purchased a 99 XC70 brand new 5 years ago. The owner's manual should specify what maintenance you should be doing. Have you looked there? I'm sure any Volvo retailer could also give you a maintenance schedule. 14-17 MPG sounds terrible. Doing about half city and half highway driving in my 2002 XC, I get around 24 MPG.
I have a 2003 V70 wagon for about 6 months now. The air conditioning got extremely cold this week on my way home, I adjusted the temperature and then the air was blowing out hot air. Just leased a 2003 V70. Just from the drive home, I plan on purchasing the car after lease or will buy/lease another Volvo. I was completely happy with my 2002 Accord EX V6 Coupe, but the V70 wagon seats are extremely comfortable. I cannot say enough about them. Also, now I have room for my labs. I hope the V70 is as reliable as the Honda Accord.
Both the manual and "use only volvo coolant" on the engine reservior suggest that I should only top off with Volvo's coolant. Is this true, or can I use Prestone? They also say not to mix coolants. Thanks.
Our driver's side wiper chatters (vibrates on the glass as it sweeps) at all speeds. We have had the blade replaced by volvo once but this does not help. Any suggestions?

In response to jrosasmc - My local dealer has five 2002 (virtually) base level V70s advertised for just under $29K. Check out "specials" at Burdamymotors.com. I'm told that Volvo is offering a $4K factory incentive on all V70s.
We have test driven 3 2002 V70s (2.4, 2.4T, XC) and really liked the cars. We are a bit concerned about the predicted reliability in the Consumer Reports reviews. I have two other Volvos that have been great. If you have a V70, what has your experience been? Thanks!
Hello everyone, My wife and I live in Oak Park, Illinois and have decided the V70 is the perfect car for our young family. I am preparing to pull the trigger on a new T5. My one of a few gripes over the competitors is that Volvo does not offer xenon headlamps for any of their models. They are usually abused beyond all belief...either used by the dealer personally or for demonstrations, or for loaners, sometimes all three.
