it depends on how far gone the issue is. If you trans is shifting very hard between gears consistently, then you'll need it to be replaced, Volvo transmissions were not built to be "fixed" by a shop. There's a specific ECU that controls the operation of the trans and it is adaptive - meaning that it learns driving behavior. I have filed a complaint with Volvo of North America ( no ownership of the problem) I also filed a complaint with the Attorney Generals office stating there needs to be a recall on the failed transmissions. Do your homework. The 2000-2001 Volvo XC70 was completely redesigned. I bought a 2001 and it has been a nightmare. Every possible electrical problem you can imagine. Steering/suspension problems. Don't do it or if you do, do your homework. It's too bad because it is one of the most useful, comfortable cars I've ever owned. I hope they shaked the bugs out by now.

It seems to me that you should also immediately change to full synthetic oil: Mobile1 10W-30 or Mobile1 10W-30 Extended Performance. The sudden appearance of sludge may indicate that the emissions control system is allowing combustion by-products to get into the oil where it cooks the dino oil into sludge. YES! Have the oil pan removed and get the sump cleaned out. We had the exact same issue with our 2001 V70, but chose to ignore it and got stuck on an extended trip from Florida to Tennessee. The Volvo helpline advised us to remove the gas cap for 10 seconds, then reinstall it tightly. The cat converter was replaced at no charge under warranty at 17,000 mi when it became noisy--diagnosis was an interior element became loose. The shop didn't charge for this repair because they had previously diagnosed it as a bad starter and starter relay and replaced those for sizeable $$$. VW is no service picnic either. In fact they are horrible! The 2000 V70 XC used a different coupling than the 2001-2003 models. Haldex was used starting in 2004. Contrary to popular belief, Volvo's maintenance costs are pretty close to average. Since you own a V70 T5 your pockets can't be that shallow.

Most expensive car to have service done on. 1999-2002 have lawsuits against them regarding the throttle. I would never buy another Volvo again, but I certainly wouldn't buy one that was past warranty. I've put 9,000.00 into my Volvo in the last six months. The car is four !/2 years old. Thanks. As it turns out, I went and looked at it today. It's a no go. It may have been sound mechanically, but it had flaws all over the interior and exterior. Large scuffs on the black trim on the driver side, driver side mirror was cracked and had a chunk missing, interior was pretty dirty, with evidence of pets being inside (hair, very slight smell). Volvo CPO includes a warranty for up to 6 yrs or 100000 from the time the car was new. Pretty worthwhile IMO. An independent dealer will be cheaper but they won't do all the things that are required to certify a car. A Private party car is potluck. I don't know if you've shpooed at a Volvo dealer but most of them aren't high pressure places.

2005 Euro Delivery prices have been out for a while. V70 2.4M starts at $26,185 There nothing wrong w/ an 01 V70 especially if its Volvo certified. Its many times more complex than the 240 was(lets face it 240's were only slightly ahead of the horse and buggy in technical complexity) so it has more to break. Fedlawman, you might want to mention to your wife that she should be cautious when parking the car as well. We damaged one bumper on our '99 V70 on a railroad tie in a parking lot, and another on a standard "curb". Interestingly enough, the Volvo dealer has the only low curbs around....
