    it depends on how far gone the issue is. If you trans is shifting very hard between gears consistently, then you'll need it to be replaced, Volvo transmissions were not built to be "fixed" by a shop. There's a specific ECU that controls the operation of the trans and it is adaptive - meaning that it learns driving behavior.     Do your homework. The 2000-2001 Volvo XC70 was completely redesigned. I bought a 2001 and it has been a nightmare. Every possible electrical problem you can imagine. Steering/suspension problems. Don't do it or if you do, do your homework. It's too bad because it is one of the most useful, comfortable cars I've ever owned. I hope they shaked the bugs out by now.

    VW is no service picnic either. In fact they are horrible! The 2000 V70 XC used a different coupling than the 2001-2003 models. Haldex was used starting in 2004. Contrary to popular belief, Volvo's maintenance costs are pretty close to average. Since you own a V70 T5 your pockets can't be that shallow.

    I have 47K miles on my 2001 V70, no problems and love it. It fits me and my family (big & tall in size). Getting it serviced is expensive, but I'd been going to the local dealer. Get it and enjoy the car.

    Most expensive car to have service done on. 1999-2002 have lawsuits against them regarding the throttle. I would never buy another Volvo again, but I certainly wouldn't buy one that was past warranty. I've put 9,000.00 into my Volvo in the last six months. The car is four !/2 years old.     Volvo CPO includes a warranty for up to 6 yrs or 100000 from the time the car was new. Pretty worthwhile IMO.   An independent dealer will be cheaper but they won't do all the things that are required to certify a car. A Private party car is potluck. I don't know if you've shpooed at a Volvo dealer but most of them aren't high pressure places.
