Hi all, Can anybody help? My internal lights will not go out unless i slam the door several times. This can happen on both n/s & o/s fronts doors. I know there is a pin of somekind that turns them off on other cars but this seems to be done via some other method on the Volvo, unless i am looking in the wrong place. You have a leak in the "heater core". This must be attended to ASAP. Occupants of the vehicle are breathing volatilized antifreeze (active ingredient ethylene glycol) which is toxic. You should immediately take it to the dealer or a quality independent garage that specializes in Volvo and get an estimate for your car. This is not a condition that you can just tolerate. The first rate fix is to replace the ... Read More

We are also deciding between a v70, and xc70 or a vw 3.6 4motion. I was wondering if you guys purchased a car yet and if so, what was your decision and how did you arrive at it? Are you happy with your choice? Our thoughts- Really like the xc70 but already have a xc90 (sort of wish I'd considered the xc70 first time around- I think it has more cargo ... Read More

Just purchased a 1999 V70 XC with 122k. The car sells itself great handling, nice feel, great safety features. Have two other volvos that run well. The reputation Volvo has with our family is depndability. I've done a lot of internet searching in the meantime and have found several references to faults associated with the Electronic Throttle Module. The whole thing reminds me of the unfortunate boy in Lorenzos Oil his ... Read More

I hope that everyone that goes to this site can see this message, not just you. I have always heard how reliable & good Volvos are supposed to be. I really liked the look of the one that I bought used. It's all black, no dents or scrapes, all leather interior, sunroof, power windows, seats, just a really nice looking car. Well, to this day, I regret ever buying the thing. ... Read More

I suppose I'm a little late in adding my two cents. I have a '99 V70XC that's had a ton of problems (see my previous posts) and a 2004 Sienna XLE that's performed nearly flawlessly (as I expected). We find the XC to be pretty tight for longer trips but we compensated by adding a cargo box which works well -- we have a 5 yr old and a 3 yr ... Read More

Most expensive car to have service done on. 1999-2002 have lawsuits against them regarding the throttle. I would never buy another Volvo again, but I certainly wouldn't buy one that was past warranty. I've put 9,000.00 into my Volvo in the last six months. The car is four !/2 years old. You can read the details about my horrific experience on the message board.

On March 20 , '05 - the headlights on my '99 Volvo V70 shut off while rounding a curve on a dark [moonless] night. I hit a bridge abutment, the car rolled over several times and was totaled. I contacted Volvo , & received a recall notice 11 days later for defective headlight switch - it was originally issued for this model 6 MONTHS earlier. Volvo sent an "investigator" up to ... Recently I've looked at a 2000 V70XC with automatic transmission. I was surprised to learn that after 42,000 miles the car had had a new engine, turbo, and oil pump installed. Since that time it has only been driven 100 miles, and the owner is trying to sell it. The owner told me the original oil pump was defective (It didn't pump oil to one of the cylinders.). Since you recommended ... Read More

Thanks Steve--   I'll start trying to track down the vacuum system. I'm sure nothing is as easy as it was on the 240, but as I move into the "MX required" years of the car, I guess it's about time to get under the hood.   Jeff

If it happens on braking I can think of two things that might be happening. 1. a vacuum leak, or 2. a tranny issue.   I'd look at the vacuum leak possibility first, it's usually the cheapest to fix anyway. There's also a possibility the computer might have stored a code, if you have access to an OBD-II scanner you might learn more (you'd know at least as much as the ... Read More

This is my second volvo, my first was a 1986 240-- lovely car that.   I got this car through the Overseas Delivery Programme. Nice.   My wife drove it for 5 years. Now, with the third (and last) child, she moved onto a minivan, so the '86 had to go, and I moved into the Station Wagon.   I like it-- solid 30.5 MPG to work. 66 Miles round trip, ... Read More

When I say they are overpriced for what you get, I have in mind the V70 vs. the Passat wagon. We paid about $27K in 1999 or 2000 for our new 2000 V70. This was the base trim, manual trans with no options but a 6-disk cd player, at a below-invoice price. Today, 4-5 years later, we could get a new 2004 Passat GLS Wagon with diesel engine, pay about MSRP, ... Read More

I had a '97 850 wgn and loved it. Then, I went through a pre-child crisis, sold the volvo, and bought a E39 540. This is great drivers car but lacks practicality and the thought of repairs scare me as the millage adds up.    I'm debating between a 2001 V70T/T5 and a 1999/2000 V70-XC (perhaps even a '01 XC). On the issue of a Passat versus Volvo wagon, I bought a 1999 Passat wagon with the expectation that we would eventually get rid of our 1995 Volvo 850 Turbowagon. I got rid of the Passat in 2001, and we still have the Volvo. I think the following points apply to the V70 as well. My problem with the Passat was its many design deficiencies. I am wondering about picking up a used wagon in the 40k mile range. Probably 1999 or 2000. Are there any things that need to be done around this time like some cars need new timing belts and water pumps (typically german) on the V70 or S70 cars.

We recently purchased a 1999 V70. Got a certified one so it has the 6 year 100,000 mile extended warranty (almost bumper to bumper, just not cosmetics). That gives us about one year 10,000 miles left on the factory bumper to bumper plus two more years almost bumper to bumper. This is almost a good as most other new car warrantees. As others have said, the quality of the dealer can ... Read More

(It is not certified by Volvo) I have seen in Consumer Reports, letters on this site, and reports that the V70 has some real electrical problems, among other drawbacks. The new V70 for 2001 is actually built on the S80 platform, that is why you can see commonalities between the S80 interior and exterior in this new car.
