Well, the tire manufacturers each manufacture dozens of different tires. For example, Continental makes the ContiSportContact, ContiExtremeContact, ContiPremiumContact, ContiProContact, ContiTouringContact...well, you get the idea. You should decide what characteristics are important to you. For example, rank from top to bottom the importance or dry grip, wet grip, responsiveness (sharp reflexes), quiet ride, smooth ride, snow/ice traction. Let me know and I'll help you decide. BTW, my Volvo has Goodyear Assurance ComforTred ... Read More
Fedlawman, I appreciate your encouragement! The Volvo guy prounounced it a worthy car ready for a timing belt in 4K and a few minor issues. Their mechanic verififed regular oil changes every 3K and a few repairs we questioned --so this looks promising. I've made an offer which will be presented to the boss (the wife) and hope this is the car for me. My priority is tires. in the Pacific ... Read More
If you have kept French cars on the road, the Volvo will be no problem. It's actually built just like a German car under the skin - lot's of Bosch, Ate, Mahle OE parts. There's a lot of aftermarket support online, and everything is easy to reach and easy to work on.
I'm off to see the local Volvo cerified independent my friends trust. Able to handle the basics myself and keep the tools in the car. So perhaps this will work! Thanks for your feedback. I've babied Citroens and Peugeots for many years...how hard can a Volvo be? Looks much easier to work on.
CONSIDERING THIS PURCHASE: I'm having a local certified Volvo specialist (much trusted by friends) check this car out tomorrow. I could hardly believe how tight and smooth it felt even after driving a couple of 1994 era 850's that were smooth as silk but looking tired. Surprised that the interior is spotless and leather is not cracked. Exterior shines. Serviced locally so I can request those records. Timing belt replaced at ... Read More
Sorry to join this session late, and I guess "drinksforall" already made a decision and got a new(er) car. One thing that is necessary to check before buying any Turbo charged volvos (learned it my on hard $$$$ way), have it checked by a pro-service station. I bought my V70 AWD 1998 (not XC) privately by good words from a well-known service-station and as of today I have put in more ... Read More
Hey, here are a few bits of info that helped me, I've owned and loved 3 Volvos myself and they've become "the family car." First, the bad is that, provided you take the Volvo path, be aware that repairs do cost more. The catch though, is that, in my experience, they require much fewer trips to the shop. On top of this, the cars computer system seems to provide ample warning ... Read More
Don't know if anyone can help here, I am trying to find out if the cambelt has been changed and there is no record in full service hastory, there is a sticker on the cambelt cover with a part number and serial number but no date. Does this sound like it has been done. 114,00 miles on the clock.
hello jim thanks for all your great advice i was just wondering if you also know anything about the air con on same vehicle it doesn't get very cool although all seems to work perfectly. it was re-gassed 6 months ago but was apparently was not used in the meantime . this car is beginning to sound like a lemon but it really is a bit of a beauty so worth ... thanks you lot all this info is exactly what is required so it looks like mobil1 ow40 could be the one to try ? please confirm if you all agrea and anybody else aswell the more heads on thecase the better.any tips on what new filter?
I use Mobil1 0W-40 exclusively.
I don't know what are the specific indications for an engine flush. Personally, I would try changing the oil first because it cannot do any harm and might solve the problem. And I would run it for several thousand miles before I would decide on an engine flush, unless the lifters are really loud and continue unchanged. If you get lucky, the viscosity change and the solvent properties of the synthetic ... Read More
cheers jim i will get timing belt done asap and try youre suggested oil would you recommend a good engine flush first with filter change
Try changing to Mobil1 (or just standard if you cannot afford synthetic) 5W-30, or 10W-30 if your climate is ultra hot, see the manual. Is 10W-40 is a recommended oil for this engine? The lifters might not be performing properly with that oil. Of course, you are overdue on the timing belt change, and that should be attended to ASAP. I understand that this is an interference engine, so that if ... Read More
thanks for replying, engine has 114,000 on clock but no cam belt changre recorded in otherwise full service history, running engine on 10/40 part synthetic oil.
I don't know for a fact, but I would assume that the lifters are oil filled self adjusting. How many miles on the engine and what oil have you been using? Your hydraulic lifters may be sticking. By changing to synthetic oil of the right viscosity you might be able to free the lifters.
does this car have self adjusting tappets if not is it a big job to do as my tappets appear to be tapping
In early September of 2007 I became the owner of a used 2001 V70 XC it at the time had 127,000 miles. The overall car was garage kept and in immaculate condition. Prior to owning the Volvo I owned a 1998 4wd Toyota Tacoma, however I am in college and while in my apartment someone broke into my truck, stole various items and rolled my vehicle off of a 10 ft ... 1998 Volvo V70 XC AWD 2.4L, 5 cyl. I recently pulled the engine and transmission in order to replace old seals and gaskets. The car has 225,000 miles and was leaking everywhere, but other than that, the car was running fine. I put the engine back in, and the car turns over strongly, but won’t fire. There is no spark getting to the plugs so I checked the distributor wire coming ... Read More
Hey I have a 1998 Volvo v70. It is just a normal v70(not a turbo or T5) My problems are over starting issues. I am a college student, so when I leave my car to sit for a period of time from couple of weeks to a month, it will not start. It is not a problem of turning over, the starter cranks it over perfectly. I usually try to start ... Read More
Wow, I guess it isn't just Volvo. All 2001 cars have defective transmissions! From the NHTSA website... 2001 Lexus RX300: "Transmission went out on a busy interstate at night with myself, my husband and our 8 month old daughter. Had to get the highway patrol to follow us to an exit. This car had 98000 miles on it at the time and according to all my internet research this is a ... Read More
Thanks to everyone with all the wonderful advice. It was a loose connection. They changed connectors that only cost .99 cents. Just FYI, if anyone has the same problem many repair shops knowing the part cost less than a dollar will try to charge $45 to $50 for the labor. My shop did not charge me;-) I also through word of mouth found a repair shop that will repair volvo at ... Read More
A relative's van had a problem like that and it finally was fixed with a relatively inexpensive repair of a "ground connection". The shop didn't charge for this repair because they had previously diagnosed it as a bad starter and starter relay and replaced those for sizeable $$$. I was handling the repair and when I picked-up the car it started correctly. On the way home I stopped and then it ... Read More
I just purchased a 1998 volvo V70 wagon. Word to the wise make sure someone checks the starter or electrical system. I am new to the Volvo family. My purchase is only a week old and this morning my car would not start. AAA provided a jump-start. My altenator and battery both checked out fine. It was been on a electrical digital reading device to come out as pass. I did ... Read More
I am looking at a 1998 V70 AWD wagon for sale. I have never owned a volvo. Any thoughts , suggestions, cautions for this year & model. What kind of milage can I expect? Any particular trouble spots? Any help greatly appreciated!...Eric
My wife drives a 2002 Volvo V70 with the touring package (It's as base as they had at the time). We live in Massachusetts and she was pleasantly surprised by it's performance in the winter. According to her, it sticks to the road. We also liked the self dimming rear view mirror and the stereo. Of course, neither of these were on our list of important items (safety, reliability, and fuel ... Read More
I just found this forum and thought I'd check in for some input from real people driving Volvos. I have had a 1995 850Turbo (totalled in a rear-end collision last year) and a 1998 S70 Turbo. I loved the '95; not crazy about the '98. Anyway, we are down-sizing from a mini-van to the V70. My mechanic said absolutely not to get a XC---way too many electrical problems. From a quick ... Volvomax is right, Subbies are good cars as well. However... I bought a 1998 Legacy GT and just last August replaced it with a new 2004 V70 2.5T. The cars are in two very different classes. We had both vehicles for the last year and every time I got in the Subaru, it felt cheap, much smaller, unprotected and underpowered. To be fair, because the Volvo is not AWD, it doesn't ... I am looking to buy a 1998 V70--trying to stay under $10,000. The cars I am looking at are at that mileage (around 100K) that would necessitate having the timing belt replaced--although I think Volvo really recommends have the timing belt replaced at 70,000 miles. Does it really cost around $1000 to have the timing belt replaced on a V70? and Would you hesitate to buy a V70 that hadn't had ... Read More
My 1998 V70 XC stalls intermittently, making me rather nervous. So far it has happened in residential areas, but who's to say it wouldn't occur on the freeway... I've had it towed into the dealer twice. They say they can't figure it out as no error codes come up when it happens. So now I'm left with a car that is unsafe to drive and worthless to turn in. Any ideas ... Read More
The brakes are clearly the weak point in my 1998 V70. I can count on pads and rotors at least every 30k miles, both front and rear. I'm not a huge Midas fan, and also found that the "free pads for life" deal wasn't all that fruitful. Furthermore i've had several non-dealer Volvo specialists tell me that non-Volvo brake pads are unpleasantly noisy. Looks like it's something I'll have to live ... Read More
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good Independent Volvo service shop I can bring my 1998 V70 T5 to in the lower Hudson Valley / Northern NJ area ? I've run out of patience with my Rockland County dealership's shoddy work and sky high pricing. Thanks in advance.

For all those posting about reliabilty, let me rant about my 1998 V70 AWD 5-Spd stick. Great driving car, handles like it's on rails in corners (Michelin Pilot XGT Z4 205/55-16), the best seats I've ever sat in and plenty of power for my needs. Unfortunately, this is where it ends. I should have clued in to the problems and bought the extended warranty plan when it was offered as the ... Read More
Thank you first of all for not labeling me a 'complainer'. I see that sometimes this forum is used for complaining and bashing. My intent was to inform and for people to make their own educated decision about Volvo. I truely wish the car had performed as expected as we were set on becoming another million mile customer. This was to be one of those extended decisions in the life of ... Read More
A lot of conversation goes on about Volvo cars and their attributes. I want to share my ordeal with my leased 1998 Volvo V70 wagon that I understand is more common than Volvo or most owners want to admit. I am very interested in buying a 2000 Volvo V70 Wagon (with cold weather package, touring package and sunroof/leather package) but have heard some negative things about recent Volvo models -- particularly the 1998 V70 (and the new V40).
