Volvo V50 2005 Engine noise.

I have a 2005 V50 with 67,000 miles on it. Love the car, after owning a 91 240 wagon for years. When I start the car I here this loud buzzing noise from the engine. When turning the engine off it continues for about 1 minute then clicks off. I lifted the hood and it is coming from this Silver cylinder in the very front of engine on drivers side. I am not sure that this response will be pertinent to you, but I replaced a 2003 Jetta wagon (TDI) with a 2005 Volvo V50 a few years ago. The reason I was looking to replace the Jetta is that I found the leatherette seats very uncomfortable. Otherwise, aside from it being underpowered, I was happy with the Jetta. Hope this helps. We are comparing the 2 for both known/common problems and regular maintenance costs. We are located in Canada. We are both not the self fixing type when it comes to vehicles. I'm not sure exactly what's wrong with my 2005 V50 T5. I've had it since July '05 and have about 25K miles. So far, have only had the radio freeze issue. But after a software upgrade, haven't had a problem since. Occasionally the radio stations change by themselves. I think there may be some vibration in the dash or something. Is the problem is flow of fuel into the tank backing up and tripping the pump nozzle? That certainly would have me shaking my head that a $30K new car built by as experienced a brand as Volvo can't design a gas tank to displace air without vomiting gas back up the filler spout as the tank fills up.
