I would love to know what happened next...... We have a 2004 S80 with 47,000 miles and your story sounds strangely familiar. We just had major engine work for $7,000, after the exact senario you just described. Very disappointed with Volvo. I saw on another post that Volvo customer car told someone else they should have bought the extended warranty. Unbelieveable! They told me the same thing.

Got my car back today. Volvo replaced the wheel stops AGAIN. Wheel stops weren't the problem the last 7 times it was brought in for service on the thumping noise, I don't know why it will be the problem this time. They have replaced the wheel stops several times in the past. Looking at older posts on this site about Volvo S80's, this problem goes back to at least 1999.

I would say that a newer Volvo would not be a good choice if you were going to shoot for the million-mile mark. See, Irv Gordon set that record in a P1800. Back then, Volvo's were better made, but most importantly, they were far simpler. My parents have a 2004 S60, and I have doubts about it being able to sustain even 200,000 miles. Just based on hearsay, and prior knowledge of Volvo pricing. The XC90 V8 base is $45,840, a loaded one is $55,000. The base on the S80 V8 should be a couple grand less, but a well equipped one should hit $50,000 easy. That will still be alot less than any competitors V8 sedan. The S80 T6 topped out @ $48000 in 2004.

The Volvo is one big computer. Think about adding a component to your home pc. You need software to tell the computer what to do with the component. The S80 is programmed to accept only certain approved components. Any other parts have to be programmed in order to work. This includes certain replacement parts like radios.
