I have a 2003 Volvo S80. Recently the directionals stop displaying on the dash. At first it corrected itself in 5 minutes or so, now it takes longer or works at startup and then stops. Volvo tried to fix this, and took the dash off and tightened things. It worked for a day. They tell me that I will need to replace a $1000 computer module. It must be easier?
You need to ask CR about all those black dots. I am not aware of any real suspension problems even with the earlier model years, and by 2003 Volvo S80 has become very reliable. And when it comes to the paint and body integrity - I truly have no idea what they are talking about. You need to see and ride my 2000 S80 with 138K miles on it to understand ... Read More
My son is looking at a 2003 S80 Volvo special edition with 43,000 for $17,990 and ask me to do some research. CR has a black circle for suspension, paint/trim and body integrity on the 03 models. What is the problem with the suspension? Is this an automobile that is going to cause him problems? He just blew the engine on a 2000 Trooper and needs a reliable vehicle!
I have a 2003 Volvo S80 and the following message "bulb failure, position light" appeared in the text box warning me of a problem. I also have no way of determing which bulb it is. My owners manual does not address this message. I have searched for a repair manual but to no avail. Could someone assit me in the procedure for determining the correct bulb and/or locating a repair manual. ... Read More
I need a luxury/entry-luxury vehicle for city driving, that is also capable of handling the mountains, all for under $33K. My work requires shuttling executives (luxury/class). My personal life includes being both a single guy in Los Angeles (style) AND spending significant time in the mountains (awd or stability control). Also, the vehicle should make me look older/more executive than my age (early 30’s), without looking pretentious. I will probably finance ... Read More
I have got to tell everyone that my 2003 S80 T6 is the best car I have ever driven. I am at 20,000 miles with no problems (knock on wood). Would not recommend the GPS, only works in large cities, everywhere else is nearly blank!
I have a warranty question. I found a used 2004 S80 that was originally pruchased in Aug of 2003. Was the Volvo warranty at that time 50K miles or 36k miles?
How about a 2001 certified pre-owned. I was thinking of getting one. Look at this example (actuall for sale at Volvo dealers in SoCal) of price difference between two certificaed PreOwned S-80s with about the same number of miles. 2000 S80 2.9 A SR 26,162 $21,995 2003 S80 2.9 A SR 19,010 $29,640 It would seem to me the 2000 year S-80 is a great deal over the 2003. Why would ... Read More
It sounds like you are dealing with an adaptive transmission. If you consistently drive like a granny or consistently drive like you stole it you would never know the car has an adaptive logic transmission. The problem you face comes about when you suddenly decide to drive differently than you have for many prior miles. If you drive in an economical fashion and decide you suddenly need some power there are ... Read More
No issues w/ either model year. The S80 was fully sorted out after the 2000 model yr. Sat radio isn't available on any Volvo, however an aftermarket unit could be installed and play through an FM modulator.
The owners manual says to rotate tires each 7500 miles and to rotate front to rear and rear to front but never to criss-cross to other side. The car has 17" Michelins. This is totally different from the recommendations for US cars I have owned. They have been to move rear tires to the front on same side and to criss-cross the front tires to the rear. Also, the US manuals ... Read More
The manual says to use 91 octane gasoline. That said I really don't find any difference between Amoco silver and gold which are 89 and 93 octane. No difference in gas mileage or performance. Also, I have a 2003 s80 2.9, every other car I've had I've always changed the oil after the first 1000 miles and then 3000 miles from then on. When I got my volvo I posted the ... Read More
On the S80 right now if you're credit is good you can get a very good money factor on a lease on all models. I just got an S80 T6 and the dealer was allowed to use a .004 money factor from Volvo finance. Of course leasing does not allow you to get the current incentive if you are purchasing the car - which my dealer said was worth $7500 (continuing ... Read More
I am brand new to this message board. From reading the 2003 entries I have not seen much discussion about the 2002 models. Some background before my questions. I am considering buying my first Volvo S80. Due to a scarcity of free time, I want/need a car that will be reliable, under manufacturer warranty for many miles and won't require me to perform more than just basic services. This leads me ... I was able to lease a 2003 s80 2.9 for $7700 under invoice. Volvo was running a great deal which expired 2/28. my2003 is going to be a short year, you might want to check around. Dave
Hi everyone, I am the "proud" owner of a 2000 S80 2.9, and am in the 33rd month of a 39 month lease. My lease ends in mid-August 2003, and am counting the days until I can turn the car in. Recently (within the past 2 weeks), the power steering on the car has been making a LOT of groaning and wheezing noises. This problem occurs randomly, but always starts when ... Read More

I have a 1999 S80 2.9 bought new in October 1998 with 44,500 miles on it. It is out of warranty. While I love this car (my 4th Volvo) it has been a "lemon" since day 1. At 28,000 Volvo replaced the transmission. A third transmission is being installed as I write this, and Volvo will not do anything because the car is out of warranty. The dealer won't even let ... Anybody hear any rumors as to when or if Volvo/Ford will offer 4 wheel drive on the S80?? My '99 T6 has over 60K now and I can't help thinking about the next one. Thanks for any help! And happy 2003 to you all! You all give us/each other lots of help and support! rld.
markian, The only change I've heard of for '03 is replacing the black side body molding with color-coordinated molding. I'm thinking about repeating our overseas delivery experience for an '03 myself and am anxious to know what other changes are planned, but I doubt anyone will know for sure anytime this year.
