Re: Volvo S80 (2002) reliability? repair costs? [rambod]

Price sounds fine. By 2002 the S80 was very reliable. Repair costs are higher than a typical car. A warranty is always a good idea.

Hi I have the opportunity to buy a 2002 S80 with 50000 miles for $15000. Is this a good buy? More importantly since it is out of warranty: How reliable is the S80? How much do repairs cost compared to std US cars? Is extended warranty a MUST? I would love to buy this car but am very concerned about failure rates and repair costs. Please help Rambod.

Oil leak
Written by: bigjohn2 on Oct 22, 2005 5:50:17 PM
I have a 2002 Volvo S80 non-turbo and it has developed an oil leak from a line that seems to ge from the engine to the radiator (I guess for oil cooling). The fittings on that line have been tigthened and that fixed it for a while. Then the mechanic changed the PBC "box" that was recommended, and that seem to help. But it is still leaking around a valve in ... Read More

2002 Volvo S80
Written by: corvette on Oct 18, 2005 8:50:46 PM
My mom has one of these, and I must say that this thing has had more isolated, intermittent electrical glitches than I've seen in a long time. Cruise control won't activate, restart the car and it works fine. Switches on driver's door won't work, wait a couple of days and they're back to normal. Fuel door won't open, restart car and it works fine. The irony of this is that she ... Read More

Re: Service codes? [patg3]
Written by: heywood1 on Apr 3, 2005 6:29:17 PM
I'm replying to you again, as my post was deleted for referring you to a website for Volvo owners that would have helped you identify the service codes. 1999 was the first and darkest year for the S80. The major components that are likely to fail are not mileage-related, and they are EXPENSIVE. I'd buy a 2002 model or newer, because this is a wonderful car.

Re: question for owners [qbrozen]

qbrozen, I actually liked my 1999 S70 better than my 2002 S80. I did like the exterior styling of the S80 better, but that's about it. The S80 just didn't feel as solid to me, and the interior of the S70 just seemed to be of higher quality. In addition, I found that the S80 had blind spots which were annoying when backing up or changing lanes. I just ... Read More

I have a 1999 s80. I wish I had seen this site before, would love to have known if the throttle cleaning was my problem. Bought it in Novemebr 2002. In shop 9 times in 6 months with power drop off, eventually replaced intake manifold, only slight improvement. Just replaced throttle body, as well as, front sway bars twice, strut mount front drivers, both rear struts, brake booster, sunroof need replacing, ... Read More

Volvo S80 (2002)and 3 cracked windshields
Written by: gfr1336 on Aug 25, 2004 6:39:52 AM
I have just incurred my third cracked windshield on my 2002 Volvo S80 sedan, which has about 42,000 miles on it. Each time I have had the windshield replaced at a Volvo dealership. Since I have owned Volvos for 20 years and never had a problem with a cracked windshield before, this does not seem right to me. I was wondering if other Volvo S80 drivers are experiencing cracked windshields ?. ... Read More

Any strong opinions re: S80 2002?
Written by: bg13 on Jul 23, 2003 5:39:02 AM
I am brand new to this message board. From reading the 2003 entries I have not seen much discussion about the 2002 models. Some background before my questions. I am considering buying my first Volvo S80. Due to a scarcity of free time, I want/need a car that will be reliable, under manufacturer warranty for many miles and won't require me to perform more than just basic services. This leads me ... Potential good deal ?

There is a Volvo dealer in my area that still has several new 2002 S80 models. Considering they are soon to be 2 years old would you expect to get very good pricing on these models? Anyone with experience in this situation? Thoughts on specific discounts? Thanks.

According to JD Power the 2002 S80 had the fewest initial quality defects of any new Volvo. Volvo placed 5th in the total survey, 1 point ahead of Honda. Volvo has made alot od under the skin changes on the S80. The new car is quicker, looks better and has better features than the 99 version. I have read through the messages for the last 12 months or so and see many comments about poor reliabiity on the S80, but most of them seem to be on the 1999 and 2000 models. I was out driving several vehicles last week and had not been considering the S80. Performance on snowy roads?

I just got my 2002 S80 2.9 this past Spring, so I don't know how it performs on the road under snowy/icy conditions. It doesn't have all-wheel drive, but rear wheel drive. All my other cars in the past have had front wheel drive. What can I expect from the Volvo under these driving conditions. Safe to drive? Volvo Dealers in the Queens, New York Area

Can anyone from the Queens/Nassau County area recommend a Volvo dealership? I bought the car at Emet Motors, but to get to that part of town is rather inconvenient and the area around the dealership is always congested. Regarding my car's history, it is brand new, was not in an accident or previously owned. I called the Volvo dealership this morning and asked why my 2002 Volvo S80 did not have the black bumper and side door guards. The very helpful saleslady replied that the half year models were manufactured without them for aesthetic reasons. But they had the same guards but were the same color as the car. ... Read More

Re: Attention

Sigh. Poor Volvo. The latest issue of AutoWeek had a review on the S60, which Volvo is positioning as a sport sedan to compete with the A4, 328, and C-class. Autoweek's comments were sadly familiar: "great looker" "shows its familysedan roots" "torque steer" "like all Volvos, it displays a quiet isolation from the road, with no (wheel) feedback to speak of." And so forth. Autoweek had the first mention of what ... Read More
